    You may just be able to call Adobe and talk them into giving you a Pr CS4 license (serial number) given the mis-communication regarding RS-422 support on their web-site.

    If you buy Production Premium (or Master Collection) CS5, you get Pr CS4 included. Not so with stand-alone Pr CS5.

    Pipeline Digital, the company that used to make RS-422 adapters and serial control software, seems to no longer be around. BlackMagic Design seems to only support RS-422 via their own software Media Express.

    Not sure if there is a 3rd party solution for Pr CS5 – haven’t been able to find any.

    Yes you can re-use your SATA drives; the data on them is unlikely to migrate to the new setup intact – so if you have anything critical on them, back it up.

    You’ve got a total of 18 drives, correct? 10x 1TB, 8x500GB? Would you be open to getting one 24-bay enclosure for all of them, or would you prefer to get two – an 8-bay and a 12- or a 16-bay?

    I’ve had great results with iStoragePro (division of Ci Design) boxes in terms of quality and support – and also was impressed by Stardom SohoTank. Will be happy to do a quote for you once we zero in on a configuration.

    I don’t see why you’d have to create different projects or even sequences for each file format. Just import a clip, put it on a timeline, “scale to frame size”. You may have to adjust for interlacing, uncommon frame rates and aspect ratios (e.g. when importing 24fps or 4:3 clip into 16:9 30fps sequences), but in most cases, you should be able to use the same presets for most file formats, especially if the goal is to equalize them all to one standard.

    Not my understanding – can you tell me where you read that?

    RAID 10 is a combination of striping and mirroring – but no parity.

    With any two drives failing there is a possibility of losing data – depends on which drives fail. If both drives in a mirrored set fail – all data is toast.

    That solved a lot of problems for me in the past. 🙂

    I’d also venture with a probability of just one drive failing or timing out, and the controller not being intelligent enough to figure out which drive it is and marking all four off-line. If that’s indeed the case, it’d be really hard to trouble-shoot short of replacing drives one-by-one.

    Unfortunately there aren’t too many high performance RAID cards with eSATA port-multipliers – the interface is too limiting. In other words, to get significantly better performance, you’d need to change the controller and the boxes.

    Most people end up with MiniSAS for direct-attached storage if the number of drives is 8 or more.

    8-bay boxes start at about $600; 16-bay – $2K. A decent controller – $700-900 (Area, ATTO, LSI).

    You’re right – I was just spooked by continuous repeating of “probably” around unconfirmed bits of news.

    Plus, there are many examples of amazing technologies getting killed or withering in obscurity – and that includes background rendering among other things.

    In other words, Apple’s implementation of GPU acceleration could fall far behind Adobe’s, or could be roughly equal to it. Or, it could get far ahead – which I personally find highly unlikely based on what I heard of OpenCL.

    The fact is, at the moment Apple is far behind and everything else is speculation.

    I like the idea of OpenCL – it just appears that NVidia is further ahead in the performance curve:

    “OpenCL based processing, while not as powerful as CUDAâ„¢ processing also used on DaVinci Resolve, does allow a much wider range of computers that can be used for color grading.”

    OpenGL accel and multi-processor rendering support don’t work together so software rendering will be faster and possibly more accurate than OpenGL-assisted one – especially on fast multi-core machines. There are other issues as well.

    This does not mean OpenGL does not offer a productivity boost – especially for previews.

    Bottom line, this statement:

    … should probably be adjusted to say:

    1. GPU (OpenGL) acceleration is much more limited in AE vs. Pr but not useless.
    2. It helps primarily in previews and may help with non-final renders
    3. It’s not advisable to use OpenGL acceleration in final renders in AE.
