Yeah its seems that beside some effects and maybe some color correction if you can, their is not much to do because their is no real miracle with bad quality footage…other wise it would be to easy.

Yes I captured HDV because I have a lot of hours of footage (about 20) and did not have enough space to convert all in ProRes422.

If I down convert my HDV to SD with the camera (the camera has an option to do that with iLink), will I get the same problem ?

Or, if a capture on my MacBook Pro drive and then just transfer the footage to my external drive ?

Yeah my film is more simple cuts, and fades. I might have 2 graphics and I have some title on the images. So I just shoot and edit HDV 1080i. I plan on doing a SD DVD. Can I just export my film in Prores 422 and compress that for DVD format in compressor ?

Because what I was thinking in down converting in SD is the benefit of having a easy editable format for my MacBook Pro while keeping the same time codes etc. Once that is done I go online and capture HDV that I can transform in ProRes at the end so only my edited film.

Or…If not, I have to work with ProRes 422 directly in an online process. This implicates converting to that format which will make me loose the time codes. So if I have say 18 hours of footage in 1440×1080 at 25p, I should plan to have at least 810Gb (45 Gb/hour) + an other 200 Gb or so for rendering of effects and color correction etc for the final film which will be about 20 minutes. So I working on a 1.5To hard drive with one back up hard drive seems a good option ?

So I should simply shoot, capture and edit HDV. I can render the effects and the color correction in ProRes. So if I capture HDV I can just have as much space than when I used to work in DV. Say, plan to use about 500 GB for the whole project (with ProRes rendering and the exporting etc) ?
Does the MacBook Pro will be ok working with HDV cause I’ve been told (and read) a few times that it’s not a format to edit with ?

The thing is that my 2 audio clips do not come in the same time: one after the other and so FCP only lets me link one of them to the video.

I did try “Save as” and selected a location but it was the same problem.

But I think you are right. I’ve got the information of the FCP file and it says that my account on my computer has “read & write” but everyone has “read only”. I had to change that before.

Hi.

About formats I’m not the one that really knows, I still have to learn, but about cutting up a clip in small clips that what’s to do:

Go in the Browser and open you clip in the viewer (double click)

To play the clip press space bar or the play singe in the viewer. At the moment where you want to beguine your subclip (a smaller clip of a clip), you press “i” and it puts a “mark in” point. You can also go in the menu-> mark-> mark in.
When it comes to a moment you want to stop the subclip you press “o” our menu->mark->mark out.

So you find yourself with the clip and one in and and out point that you see in the viewer in blue.

Now you have to make the actual subclip. You can press “command” and “u”. You will see that a new clip has appeared in the bin (a file in the browser) where your actual clip is. The name of that new clip is the “same name subclip”.

I’f you are not comfortable with keyboard short cuts you can go in “tools”-> “button list”. In that list you put the key shortcut. It will reveal you a button that you can drag and put at the top of your browser, viewer or canvas.

It looks complicated but it is not. When you continue and look in you maine clip you can put the reader on the “out point” and press “i” it will transform that out in “in” so you only have to find a new “out” and make an other subclip.

What you can also do if you don’t like stopping watching your clip every time to make a sub, you can just watch the clip in real time and press “<" when it comes to a point that you want it to be "in" or "out". You will see it will ad markers in your viewer. At the end you just go trough those markers by putting your reader on them and pressing "i" or "o" to make in and outs. motion images + storytelling = ? -> FILMMAKING !

Ehm….Have you set a secondary hard drive to take over the captured media ? What is you external hard drive brand ?

Try to setup your internal hard drive as second hard drive and see what it does.

If the problem isn’t here anymore, and the footage keeps capturing on you internal hard drive it must be a communication problem between FCP and you external hd, or even your system and the hd.

So in that case in the desctop, right click on the externat hard drive -> “get info” and see what how meny free space you have. It’s just to see if you system is evaluating correctly.

If after doing the first thing the problem still persists, it is a FCP bug ant that….I don’t know.
