I absolutly understand what you’re meaning.
But we’re talking about two different things.

1st thing is the container, which has to be supported by the software e.g. premiere/final cut …
2nd thing is the codec, which has to be supported by card-manufacturer.

the fact of not rendering clips in the timeline does not depend on hardware being connected.
if you disconnect you matrox-, bmd- or aja-device the software doesn’t change their behaviour of rendering/playback.
if you take for e.g. xdcam-material, playing it without video-card doesn’t require rendering when the timeline is set correctly to the codec-specifications.
    your video-hardware doesn’t change the software-behaviour!
you can also play e.g. redcam, bmp, tga, tif without rendering in the timeline!
but if your hardware doesn’t support the codec you will not see anything on your broadcast-monitor.
this is absolutly independent from the container your using e.g. mxf.

    conclusion:
    container-support is application-problem.
    codec is video-card-problem.

did you ever tried to run axio with final cut?
no, becuase it doesn’t work that way.

mxf is the container. -> apple’s problem
xdcam is the codec. -> bmd’s problem

mxf can also wrap many other codec’s: dvcprohd, hdv, dnxhd, jpeg2000, fjpg, uncompressed, tif, tga, bmp …….
so the handling of this codec’s is done by bmd.
the handling of mxf is done by apple.

    still the same.

    that’s the point.

bmd is not responsible for bringing mxf-support into final cut.
    apple has to do this.

the only thing bmd can do is to support the wrapped codecs. e.g. xdcam

in case of premiere, that’s adobe bringing in mxf-support.
bmd is only responsible for the output via the card, no matter which container is used!

mxf at first is an issue for final cut pro.
apple don’t wants you to use mxf directly. (remember p2-import into fcp)

    the xdcam-codec is a blackmagic-issue.
i’m shure they will suppport this in the future.

but as long apple doesn’t support mxf you still have to import everything (unwrap from mxf -> wrap into quicktime)

that’s a final cut issue, not bmd.

apple don’t wants you to directly edit mxf-files.

April 22, 2008 at 8:22 pm in reply to: RED and Blackmagic

RED works with Final Cut Pro 6.x.
There’s no support for Blackmagic Cards at the moment.

If you want video output you have to transcode to one of the Blackmagic-Settings (Uncompressed, DVCProHD, HDV, FJPEG …)

    new broadcast videohub sounds great.
i would like to buy one right now!

but in the professional world you need 3 more things.
    1. aes/ebu-routing
    2. fbas-routing (unfortunately, because of clients with consumer-needs)
    3. more flexible routing-interface (imagine a 72×144 router-interface on a 200 inch lcd-screen [like the old videohub])

so for that i wish for an open platform programable interface (php would be great) (imagine classic cross bars) and at least aes/ebu. fbas is done with mini-converters.

    the h264-sdi-stick is absolutly great!
the price is incredible … and mac only 😛 great!

    you guys hit it!

first, hdlink is a monitoring solution only!

the signal it is displaying comes in via hd-/sd-sdi.
the usb-connector is for the lut- & display-setup.

if you want to convert your monitoring you’ll have to use the conversion of your card.
