Mick,
Thank you for the advice. Maybe I was not clear in my post.
I do have experience working with cameras. I’ve owned a DVX-100A for years and want to step up to HD and tapeless workflow. I know the EX1 is not a great event camera, if I were just going for that market I wouldn’t be purchasing it. It’s primary purpose is commercials, documentaries, etc… However, I can make the blow of purchasing a what amounts to a 10K camera with cards easier by doing events. And I’m no fan of the Z1 at all, but it’s widely available. (Btw., don’t understand why all the rental shops in NY have the Sony, sometimes the JVC HDV, but practically never any of the Canons.)
So, since you own both, maybe you’ll know the answer about mixing. I work in FCP 6 primarily. Does it matter if B camera is a Sony? I’d imagine it mixing better than another manufacturer’s camera but maybe since they’re two different lines it makes no difference? Does it even work at all?
Thanks.

Ok, so I will capture HDV, besides being able to reference the media on tapes drive space is also an issue.
However, what happens when I start applying effects? My impression was that HDV crumbles when manipulated because of the i-frames. Am I wrong?

dv is not very gentle to graphics, as you can see.
what options do you have? using uncompressed 8-bit may give you problems because the default standard for that is 720×486 whereas dv is 720×480. those extra 6 fields can mess up things.
my advice is to use the animation codec for your graphics andsequences. since render time is always an issue, edit in dv and change the sequence settings later.
of course, eventually the big concern is your delivery format. however, using a lossless codec will ensure highest quality output.

What to do?!did that, restarted, opened another project, copied assets. got the same error when trying to do some things. screwed around, until miraculously problem went away. opened old project, copied sequence without problems.
weird. but done and over with.

but i thought images made by Google Earth are copyrighted material. can i use the movies created without paying Google for licensing and showing Google trademark? This seems to be telling me that i can’t.

Yes, I’ve had issues like that in FCP. What happens is that when you install a font usually you install a font family, and FCP chooses (in ways unknown to us mortals) which of the family it wants to use as a base font.
One way to solve it is to avoid using internal FCP text generators and use plugins or LiveType instead. However, you cannot always avoid that.
The other solution is to go into Font Book, isolate the specific font, export it, rename, and use it under a different alias. That opens a whole new can of worms, but it solves the issue if you must work within FCP exclusively.

Rick, Don,
thanks for the advice. i’m pretty happy about not having to go to the Z1U, i shot with it once and was less than happy about working with the HDV codec.
I’m pretty well covered with sound, I’ll be using wireless lav, mounted sennheiser m66, and an interview mike. I’ll also have a camera-mounted light, not a great one so i’ll use it sparingly.
I’ll be shooting with DVX100A in 30i (prefer 24p but again, light issues). Is there any advantage to shooting anamorphic considering the low light?
