  • System Installation on External HD

I have FCS1 now and would like to install FCS2. For that I prefer, as suggested on this forum, to run the OS from an external HD and install FCS2 there while having the FCS1 run off the internal HD and the OS installed on it.

At the same time I’m looking to buy another external hard drive for storage.

Would it be safe as well as convenient to use the same drive for both the OS and storage? Or should I separate the two. And if I should separate, would it be ok to run the system from a mini drive? (Doesn’t seem to raise a red flag, but since I’m already writing this post and at this moment and I would have to buy a firewire-bus mini as well I might as well ask.) And would you suggest installing Leopard on that external HD?

    Thanks.
    Alec.

p.s. I’m looking at the G-Tech G-Raid2. Is it as good as I think it is?

If your computer have an Intel processor you need to format the bootable disc with a GUID Partition Table. But this format is not the format recommended for data storage HDs. For storage Apple keeps recommending the Apple Partition Map.
If you are running a PPC, not problem. You can use your stat-up disc as a storage disc as well.
If you use a GUID partitioned disc as a storage disc, I really don’t know which problems could cause this.

Yes, this is new with the Intel processors. You can have a look: Open the Disc Utility> Partition tab> Options. You will see what we are talking about.
I had the same idea that you had, make a external bootable HD and use it as well as a media disc. But seems that is not recommended.

[Rafael Amador] “If your computer have an Intel processor you need to format the bootable disc with a GUID Partition”

Not completely true. GUID is only required on the newest Intel Macs, the older Intel Macs ones will boot from a Apple Partition Map drive.

Drives are cheep. Play it safe and keep the media drive completely separate.

    Happy Editing To You!!
