    also,

after conversion, when i export a quicktime movie with uncompressed 4:2:2 i get some unpleasant interlacing effects on video, although the graphics are sharp. if i export ntsc dv pal the video looks great but the graphics are washed out, as they would with dv. is there a solution?

    huh, it’s never simple.

i got some nasty strobing when converting from NTSC to PAL with Compressor 2. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but Nattress Converter did the job without a glitch. not sure how well Compressor 3 will work, but I’m sure Nattress Converter will still be worth the money.

    thanx.

figured out the rescaling. i forgot to nest.

one more question. my media comes from ntsc dv and some stills. graphics are imported into fcp uncompressed. i copy the media into a 720×480 timeline with 8 bit uncompressed 4:2:2 compression, best motion filtering. render and export timeline with current settings. import it into FCP, put into 8 bit uncompressed 4:2:2 PAL timeline and apply the G Converter.

am i doing the best possible quality conversion?

    oh, and another question.

when i drop an NTSC DV clip into the source clip window in filter settings the picture resizes automatically. with uncompressed 4:2:2 i have to resize it manually. is that normal procedure or am i missing something?

  • yes, this is a very likely solution. make sure video capture settings match the setting of what you’re capturing.

so how does “uncompressed” format compare to “none”? is “none” a 4:4:4 YUV format or RGB?

also, my observation, “uncompressed” limits you to a 720×486 frame. if you’re exporting 720×480 dvcpro footage the extra 6 lines may cause a number of issues for you, especially when doing compositing and graphics.

i once had the same issue. i was able to put the necessary clips into timelines, sync up the timecodes to the timeline tc, export the clips with the timecode and then put them back into a sequence for someone to look at. it’s a convoluted process and if you have done a large editing job it probably won’t work for you, but if it’s a few long clips then it may be a solution.

unfortunately after i run the codecs installer avid codecs do not appear in the quicktime dialogue or the compressor. Do you have any experience with it?
