I’ve enjoyed using Sony’s Soundforge. It’s not as full featured as Protools, but has a huge amount of features. As someone who tried Protools, and abandoned it, I think of ProTools as more of a very professional level product. Lots of learning effort to get results, but if you are thinking of working with studios for mixing etc., Protools is the gold standard, at least up here in the Pacific NW. Maybe check with local recording studios.

Alan, I don’t understand your comment about exporting from the timeline. Pr has an ability to export the sequence, which I think is the same thing you are asking for.
I would agree that the documentation for Pr (as well as online tutorials that I’ve watched in the last month), leaves a huge amount of opportunity for motivated educators!

So just to be clear, once I produce the multi-camera edit, using the nested audio track, I am supposed to render the audio track, and that will create a waveform out of the rendered track?
I’ll try that this afternoon, but wanted to make sure that’s what you were saying.
it also appears that if you put the mastered audio onto Track 1 it also still shows up. Not sure if there is downside to that process. Could be that since MC editing only handles four video streams that one of their audio tracks would not be processed by the MC editing. But frankly, I don’t think it matters since I’ve previously marked and synced the track.
I must say that once I learn the process of marking and syncing the tracks, it makes me wonder why I would need Plural Eyes.

Here’s how I managed to get through this, and perhaps it will be helpful to others.
- In addition to the standard process of creating a multitrack edit, put your main engineered audio track on audio track 1. This is the track you want as your final audio master for the sequence. Then do the nest.
Create your multitrack nested edit and do your cuts.
Dump the multitrack nested sequence to your main sequence
Export your media
What can go wrong in the normal process as described on numerous video training programs? None of them seem to describe putting the master audio track in sync on Track 1 and I have no idea how you sync it up after you do the nest and multicam edit, if you don’t get it onto Track 1. There are no waveforms left to reference after the MC edit. Did I miss something here?
There is a temptation to do your nested sequence and then export that. It doesn’t seem to work that way. You get error messages on export. So it seems that you have to take the edited nest and lay it onto your standard sequence.
Unfortunately, there is no mention of any of this out there. Please point me to a better explanation if it exists. I’ve spent a lot of time today trying to get this information from the web, Adobe etc. It just seems to not be explained anywhere….

If it’s your only editing bench (meaning the new MB Pro, I would be tempted to go back to the Mac Pro with updated card. You didn’t mention how much RAM you have in the machine, but I assume it’s 8 GBs (like mine). Also, you didn’t mention if you are creating distinct separate sequences for your individual MCs. Or is your whole 30 minute show shot in MC?
I’m doing short MC music videos and am also rather new to Pr. I do have a new i7 MBP and find that it barely can keep up with MC. I have gone to a Windows i7 with nVidia card for doing that work. The Intel HD graphics is only 512 MB on the low end MB Pros. But I didn’t really buy it for MC editing.

Thanks Paul. I have started with the presets for the Canon MXF format, and just wanted to clarify before getting much further down the road with it that if you start with that format of the sequence, that by adding in 7D MOV footage, I wasn’t needing to do something different to be in a state of ‘better’ practice than not. My work is not heavily needing color correction or green screen fx, so I don’t feel that it’s worth it to transcode everything I shoot in MOV to an editing codec. Usually it’s simple edits, multitrack and titles. I’m using state of the art multicore/multiprocessor i7’s.
But I found it interesting that you do the MC edit, then create a copy of it and then add your titles into that. Is that to avoid corrupting the original? I’ll certainly add that step, since it’s not hard to do.
Also, it would seem that you should be adding in your ‘master’ soundtrack to the Multicam sequence at the time of creating it, as the tracks that are on the cameras are simply scratch tracks. When I went to do that, it did not seem as if Premiere was allowing me to add that master track (I get my mastered audio tracks prior to editing the footage). In other NLE’s I’ve just used Plural Eyes to match up the master audio track, and all the video/audio tracks, and then created the multi cam edit. None of the tutorials I”ve watched on Pr have shown the addition of the master audio at the time of the multitrack creation.

If the hard drive is the same as your OS, then yes, that could be causing the stutter. Try offloading it to another external drive. Preferably estata.
I think it would help anyone here wanting to give you advice to post the offending video (or a clip of it) onto Youtube or Vimeo so we can see what you are describing. “moderate” might mean something different from you to me.
We have many ‘pros’ on Creative Cow. I don’t claim to be an expert in 7D, though I have shot a lot of footage with it. I also have an XF305 which is a broadcast quality camera. I don’t yet totally understand what the ‘fuzziness” is that you are describing. Is your Sony have a more recent CMOS based camera or is it a CCD sensor? (I assume a CMOS but I don’t know how old your camera is). The 7D is CMOS. It can exhibit some ‘jello’ like affects if panned too fast, or even normally to some degree!

First off, is the hard drive you are copying the files to for HD playback the OS drive or a separate estata drive? Your stutter could simply be the need to offload this hd format files to a separate drive.
As to panning problems, it’s possible, but I would post the pans you are experiencing so we can evaluate whether you are panning too fast or not. I assume, for instance you are using a professional level tripod with a video head on it?
I would recommend getting one of the excellent video overviews of your new camera(s). These professional level cameras have an enormous range of settings, much more than the Sony camcoders, and it will really help you to go through some training by a pro on what to set, with regards to exposure, shutter etc. It’s really beyond the scope of posts like this. I’ve learned a huge amount from some of these videos, because it’s advice from professionals with a lifetime of knowledge.

I’ll try it tonight. It would have been nice to have displayed a splash screen warning me to do that before proceeding. I had exited Vegas, gone into task mgr and killed all on essential processes. Vegas was not listed. This is all harder than it should be.

Ok Ed I got the serial number from Sony, and tried to install. It *did* run the install scripts but gave me numerous ‘file unable to load” messages for unknown reasons even though I was installing as Admin.
This is just too frustrating for words. I have all these crashes, I am told I have to upgrade, it takes me a couple of days to get a serial number that I didn’t know I would need, and then have the install fail to load properly. I’m really not that impressed by NB…even though I love what they can do.
Any ideas?
