CS5.5 multi cam editing codec
I have 8 30 minute tv shows comming up using 4 cameras. Last time IO edited on the timeline and it took 4-5 hours to cut them together.
I have determned the best solution is multicam edit then go back and clean up if needed. I shoot in HDV on Sony zu1. I have now learned that
my new Mac Book pro (quad 2,2) does not have the mercury playback engine support. I did a test with DV footage and it plays nicely when I do a live multicam editing between the 4 cameras. Whe I multicam edit with HDV footage the video can’t keep up and I can’t tell what I’m cutting.I prefer to edit in HD even though the final is SD. Is there an HD codec that would perform well for this? Also if I went back to my 4 year old Mac Pro and upgraded the display card to the NVIDIA Quadro 4000 would that give it the boost I need?Alan Stephens

Have you tried reducing the playback resolution? Is the footage on fast drives?

I was out of town yesterday.
the footage is on a Thunderbolt Pegasus Raid 5. It should be more than fast enough. I changed the playback to 1/4 res, but that doesn’t seem to apple to multi cam switching.Alan Stephens

Do you have any empty audio or video tracks on the main sequence or the nested sequence? If so, remove them and try again.

I don’t have any empty clips in the source seq, but I removed 2 video and 2 audio from the nested seq. Performance seems about the same maybe a little better. It goes from 2-4 frames per sec and then gets up to speed and goes full frame rate, then drops back down to 4 fps.
The source seq has the 4 hdv tracks of video and audio. 3 of the stereo audio are muted, taking my sound from audio 1.

If it’s your only editing bench (meaning the new MB Pro, I would be tempted to go back to the Mac Pro with updated card. You didn’t mention how much RAM you have in the machine, but I assume it’s 8 GBs (like mine). Also, you didn’t mention if you are creating distinct separate sequences for your individual MCs. Or is your whole 30 minute show shot in MC?
I’m doing short MC music videos and am also rather new to Pr. I do have a new i7 MBP and find that it barely can keep up with MC. I have gone to a Windows i7 with nVidia card for doing that work. The Intel HD graphics is only 512 MB on the low end MB Pros. But I didn’t really buy it for MC editing.

I have 8 GB in my macbook pro 2.2 quad core.
My Mac Pro has 10 GB RAM but is the older 2-2 core 2.6 ghz
it also has a 2 drive internal raid that is very fast.
My talk show is about 20 minutes of 4 camera MC shoot.Alan Stephens

Some improvements have been made to Premiere Pro CS5.5 since it was launched. Are you running the most current version? If not, go to Help>Updates.
