I recently bought an M1 MB Air and yes, FCP even drains it’s battery rather quickly (I cannot edit all day on battery, get about 4 hours or so at best). FCP does seem to be a power hog. Also, your MBPro I assume has a good graphic card in it, but even it it does, it’s going to have problems with 4k. I shoot with GH5s in 4k and it’s a lot more CPU intensive, as John pointed out. If you are moving to 4k and multicam, you probably should budget for one of the new M1s or M1 Pros that were just released.

Thanks Rob. I’ll give it atry. currently not using Premier enough to make it worth paying adobe 50 bucks a month forever. would like to just purchase one product and maybe pay an upgrade once in a while. I must say that I’ve had for fewer problems using Premier than I did with Vegas, but we’re talking about the last time I used Vegas was at least eight or nine years ago. The fact that you’re producing 40+ shows with multi cams means it does work. all the best

Frank while I agree that using proxies might get you through this you didn’t really clarify the machine you were on and how much ram you had. My experience with crashes on adobe seems to be very much related to a lack of enough RAM. Even 16 gigs can be overrun if you have a couple of cameras that you’re working in in 4K. If you give us an idea of whether you’ve got a limitation on your ram and machine speed maybe there’s some ideas we can give you to speed things up

  • When the project seems “done” (a year or so) I usually send them a nice note saying that given that the project seems over and I don’t charge to archive projects (as it takes up hard disk space I pay for) that I am glad to hand them all their footage on a hard disk if they bring one to me. That way, if I die tomorrow, they don’t need to go to my heirs to get their footage.

Ty, would you recommend an Omni directional or a hypercardoid capsule for that type of Mic requirement?

January 23, 2019 at 2:48 am in reply to: Advice needed on new MB Pro purchase

boy Garrett I wish I could give you a positive bit of feedback about getting a new 13 inch MacBook Pro, but I bought one for very similar reasons as youlast May and I sold it within two months. It’s under powered, it has limited ports, and all in all it was a great disappointment. that’s coming from someone that owned 2 MacBook Pros over the last 10 years before that and never would’ve suggested changing platforms . I would highly recommend either saving up the money to buy the higher end models, consider switching over to Windows where you get a much better deal or buying something that’s just slightly older with as big of a video card as you can buy and as much RAM as it can be purchased and hope it does the job for 4K. You might have to end up doing proxies to get the work done . i’m afraid that Apple is not giving us much reason to purchase their products these days. They’re overpriced at best and under powered at worst. that they have merged their Mac operating system team with the iOS team does not leave me to believe that they see much future in MacBook Pros. That They have not been able to do touchscreen yet is another damning situation for them. Technically I know why that is but the fact that there have had many years to fix that issue and have not yet done it speaks volumes about their strategy.

    Best of luck.

June 12, 2018 at 4:54 am in reply to: Canon 7D MkII video automatically stops recording

Sorry to say, yes. That’s the limitations with that camera. DSLRs that are produced for world sale run into the rule in the EU, where they are classified as still cameras. They are not allowed by law to record over 30 minutes. If you had a camcorder they are not classified the same. It’s a reason that, if you are recording professional concerts and other events that run beyond 30 minutes you likely will find it worth while picking up a camera that has the ability to have two SD slots to run continuously or buy a camcorder. I’m not sure you can get clean HDMI out of that 7D. IF true, then you could buy an external recorder to send the HDMI output to. Good luck. I had a 7D once, sold it for a 5D and external recorder.

  • And to be clear, I believe that in frustration with crashes due to linking, I rendered the linked project in the other app, then added it back into the master project to avoid the link.

  • Evan, Paul may be right, but here are some ideas from working with Pr on Windows in the past (I currently am back on the Mac).

I experienced problems with dynamic linked comps. Not sure if you can try it without them.
Also, while unlikely with your setup, have you tried running perfmon (performance monitor) and seeing if you might be running low on RAM? While 32GBs might seem like tons, and maybe it is, but I found that random crashes seemed to occur much more frequently when low memory conditions were happening. With all the linked comps and EFX it could be that a low RAM condition is occuring.
Also I found in the past that 3rd party efx also caused crashes. But it seems like you have tried disabling them.
Another issue that could be checked is to move the project assets *off* the internal drive. the contention for OS management and app management could be creating problems. I have all my assets *always* off the internal drive. The only thing on the internal drive is the Adobe apps and efx apps themselves. The project lives on a fast external drive. You say you are running a USB 3.0 drive, but how fast is the drive itself? Can you get access to a fast NTFS drive to see if the MacDrive 10 is an issue. (How full is the external drive?)
Also, Paul might be onto something. You say that you tried various codecs? Did you mean you tried exporting to various other codecs and it always crashes randomly?
But the project plays inside Adobe just fine? It’s only when you go to export you have issues? That to me, seems like it could point to the linking. I don’t think I’d be worrying about Window 10 and the various hardware compatablity issues. I’ve experienced that before and it wasn’t the hardware and OS. That you say you have exported this project before with no problems, leads me to think it may be in the EFX or Linking. Did you add any sequences that were EFX or linking heavy near the end of the project that you could setup an export that ended before the end of the project and back up to the end or until it fails?

Good luck. Sorry for your aggravations.
