I shot a virtual graduation ceremony in 4K and have been experiencing a lot of crashes when I edit in PP. I’m wondering converting all of my clips to 1080p will give me more stable performance.

The video’s final home will be on the web, so the extra resolution isn’t that big of a plus.

My plan is to resize my clips and create a duplicate project linking my timeline footage to the new material.

    Does my plan make sense?

I see a lot of ‘free’ video converters online – is this a good option?

    Edit using Adobe’s “Proxy” functions.

This will give you the performance advantage of editing using a lower resolution while preserving the full quality original for rendering and mastering. Proxy editing is a critical skill to learn if you want to work with high-quality original, unless you want to through a lot more money at your hardware.

Frank while I agree that using proxies might get you through this you didn’t really clarify the machine you were on and how much ram you had. My experience with crashes on adobe seems to be very much related to a lack of enough RAM. Even 16 gigs can be overrun if you have a couple of cameras that you’re working in in 4K. If you give us an idea of whether you’ve got a limitation on your ram and machine speed maybe there’s some ideas we can give you to speed things up
