Joost, make sure your drivers are up to date and approved by Vegas. There are specific drivers for nVidea for example, and cards, that have been tested. If all is well there, then try this. (discussing on another thread also at present)

Turn off GPU acceleration. Go back to OFF and let the CPU handle it. If that doesn’t fix it, then try closing your video preview window prior to rendering.

Let us know if that helps.

Having just dealt with this last week, I can tell you *why* you would need to do it.

I have been redoing a video I edited in Vegas 11 for a client. Upgraded to 12 to stay current. Did the editing. No crashes on the normal A/B timeline using both AVCHD and MOV (5D) and GoPro footage. When I started adding simple titles etc. to the timeline, using new tracks for both the titles and the graphics the crashing of old started all over again (I’m working with the latest download of 12, build 726, which some people claim is “stable”).

So I turned off GPU processing on my Nvidea GTX 570 card with driver 311.06, (which is on the list of supported cards and software of Vegas’s web site). Surprise surprise. All my crashes stopped happening. So to be clear, I’m working with the CPU (i7, 16GBs RAM, Windows 7 64) doing all the work. For kicks, I turn the GPU back on and the crashing starts happening again.

Now I finish the project, with the GPU off and go to render. It’s a 15 minute video, I tried rendering it to SD and HD 720p with the video preview window on. Each time, and this is reproduceable, the rendering gets about halfway through, and freezes. I go out for dinner, come back, still locked at whatever, 42% or 38% something.

I decide to close the video preview window, click to get rid of it, and then re-render, and what do you know, I get through rendering on both SD and HD without a problem.

By the way, Dynamic RAM preview is set to 1024, Max rendering threads to 16.

Steve, do you have a special version of Vegas 12? I don’t see an “internal” tab under my preferences. It’s the only one that’s missing.

So I’m glad to see this thread, I’ll know how to do this from the menus in the future. Thanks!

  • Right. I think I remember now that I also had to generate new titles. I would love to have his contact, because in some cases I’d be willing to pay to have someone who really had all the answers to the issues before I wasted my time on the conversion. Redoing all the subclips would have been no different than simply recreating the whole project.

And yes, I’m migrating to Adobe on either platform, but likely the Mac going forward.

  • Steve, I’m in the same boat, and found that while I was able to import the video to Premiere, that the subclips I created in Vegas did not come across correctly. Did you find that true also? I abandoned the idea, and finished the project in Vegas, but likely will need to do some of this in the future. Any quick hints on the best practices for the conversion?

I found that if you don’t use subclips in your original, and simply have A and B roll with simple transitions (like you find in an interview), that it seems to work pretty well.

All good advice. Rentals if you are near a city that has one. Also leasing. I was able to use the Canon lease program after I had some track record. This allows you to treat the outlay of money as a deductable expense immediately, and keeps the total amount of the cost in your pocket as long as possible. With cameras changing all the time buy the lenses and lease or rent the bodies. I ended up with a C100 which I would *highly* recommend as the tool to shoot for . I have used almost all the Canon DSLRs over the last 4 years, along with their xf105 and 305 camcorders. All great tools but the C100 is just amazing. My go to camera now, though I have others that are just as “good”. The ability to use WideDR and C Log allows you to shoot a most amazing range of exposure. While the BMCC is liked by folks I know, I like the complete shooters package of the C100 and the like.

Good luck! It’s a fun life if you can make it work for you. I ran my own studio until I was 30, when I moved into another line of work, and I’ve been back doing it now for four years. What I know now that I didn’t know then was that people who are properly capitalized (have a bankroll behind them) are much more likely to succeed than those that don’t….(G)

You might also take a look at the Canon EOS-M. I really like mine, and it’s not much larger than the Kodak when you have the 22mm pancake lens on it. Uses the same sensor as the 7D. Takes fabulous footage, and with an adapter you can mount canon lenses on it. Also has a mic in and you can adjust the volume levels. They appear to be close to putting out a new version, and the current version is very inexpensive in the States.

  • Now I’m getting a different problem…I needed to change the titles to a different but similar look. I recreated them using AE, and output them again. I now have an avi file, just like the first ones but with a different look, and they are about the same size. But when I go to run the render on Vegas 12, the new ones just go off into a never ending rendering process. Vegas doesn’t *appear* to be locked up, the Elapsed Time counter is still counting up, but the rendering is stuck at 15%, now going on 10 minutes. This to render a clip that is only about 10 seconds long!

I’ve doubled checked that the clips are set to the same settings as the others (that worked). The others did not take anywhere near this long to render.

When I run them on the view window, prior to rendering, they look ok.

I’ve also tried recreating the titles in AE to make sure I didn’t screw them up someway.

    Any ideas?

Seems to work fine, no issues in a month of use.

I agree with Steve. 14mm would be my choice but your client might find it too wide.

  • Used Mac Pros seem like a bargain. My 3.1 is still running fine three years on. I have a USB 3.0 card along with nvidea and lots of RAM.For faster rendering I use the mb Pro I7. I likely will upgrade to a later M Pro before the new one. I plan to wait on the next gen before considering buying.
