  • Alpha Channell Titles from Ae not working in Vegas 12? A tip…

I have had to update a project in Vegas. Using 12 with Windows 7, 16 GB RAM. I have created animated titles in AE, and rendered them in AVI with Alpha Channel. I can open them in a Premiere project, and the alpha channel works fine, the titles do what they are supposed to do, which is show up as overlay. When I bring them into Vegas, they don’t work. They are opaque. Why?

Well I looked at the titles generated in Vegas, by the standard titler, and examined the Properties of the clip. The generated ones in Vegas show the Alpha Channel as “Premultiplied” while the AE generated ones said None. I have no idea why Vegas doesn’t read the AC “right” or what I had to do in AE to generate something Vegas could read, since it works in Pr, but changing the Alpha Channel setting to Premultiplied, fixed the problem.

That is not a problem Al, that is the correct method you go about
generating an Alpha Channel in Vegas. Vegas does things differently
from Premiere and AE, they are different software.

Thanks Steve. I’ve used Vegas since #9, and I never encountered the need to use a third party alpha channel titling output, so I guess when I went to find the answer to the problem of “why is this opaque on Vegas and not on Premiere?” that I had no idea where to look for the answer. Did I miss some obvious way of understanding this obscure setting deep within the menu of preferences for the clip? I thought I was just skillful or lucky in thinking to look at those differences.

No, Vegas just doesn’t look for alpha channels in all media. Instead it associates alpha channels with file types. So alpha channels are not associated with AVI clips so it doesn’t look for them in AVI’s. Alpha channels are associated with PNG so it looks for them in PNG files. You didn’t do anything wrong. This is just a limitation of Vegas Pro.

BTW, I would use QuickTime Animation codec for rendering titles with alpha channels. It produces much smaller files and the animation codec is optimized for computer graphics generated output like titles.

Now I’m getting a different problem…I needed to change the titles to a different but similar look. I recreated them using AE, and output them again. I now have an avi file, just like the first ones but with a different look, and they are about the same size. But when I go to run the render on Vegas 12, the new ones just go off into a never ending rendering process. Vegas doesn’t *appear* to be locked up, the Elapsed Time counter is still counting up, but the rendering is stuck at 15%, now going on 10 minutes. This to render a clip that is only about 10 seconds long!

I’ve doubled checked that the clips are set to the same settings as the others (that worked). The others did not take anywhere near this long to render.

When I run them on the view window, prior to rendering, they look ok.

I’ve also tried recreating the titles in AE to make sure I didn’t screw them up someway.

    Any ideas?

    [Al Bergstein] “Any ideas?”

Try using QuickTime Animation. This is what I use and I have no problems rendering.
