June 16, 2010 at 3:59 pm in reply to: Do YOU own an HMC-150 or HMC-40?

Tod,not sure I totally understand. if I drag a clip from my HMC-150 onto my timeline, where are you talking about? The timeline doesn’t reset to the clip’s “streams” setting, is that the setting you mean?

For example, when I look at a clip, the streams setting shows 00:00:09:.510

This was the second clip I shot that day, so it’s likely that the first clip *was* 9 seconds long. So using Sony Vegas Pro 9.0d (not sure why I’ve not upgraded on this machine) it doesn’t appear to be ‘resetting’ the timecode, if in fact the ‘streams’ info is the real timecode.

However, am I not seeing the right problem?

Hope this helps. I’ll also look at my desktop machine and see if the same clip behaves in the same way on VP 9.0e which is what I have on that box.

I don’t think that the ‘entry level’ training products are a problem, and you have found a good source at the Sony site, along with YouTube, etc. I’ve never not found a link to something I needed as a someone with only 7 months of Vegas use. Also, if you can find a copy of Sony’s Digital Video & Audio Production training used, it is worth having on your bookshelf. It covers most of the basics.

What I think is lacking is a comprehensive, in-depth overview of all the advanced settings in Vegas. What are the real uses for many of these menu items, for example? I know what they ‘sound like’ but not sure when and where to use them to best affect. I feel I’m just not getting all out of this product. I also keep a workstation around with FCP for example, and I have a great book for that called “Final Cut Pro Power Skills” by Jordan. I’d love to see such a book for Vegas.

Norm, that Mic you recommended has an XLR adapter on it. The T2i is a canon with a mini jack. That particular mic I don’t believe will work. I believe you need a Rode, Azden, or Audio Technica with a mini jack capability.

At the low end of the scale, Azden sells a cheap but useable mic, the SMX-10 which shock mounts, is stereo and only costs about $69.00

I just shot this video today using the Azden on the T2i. Is it better than the on board terrible mic? You be the judge. I’d have to say it is. Will it hold up for $65? That remains to be seen. However, I’ve got a lot of other great XLR based mics, and this seems to be just fine for now. On more professional shoots, I’ll use my pro mics, mixpre for mixing, and feed to both the camera and a Zoom.

  • Pete, a quick basic question. Are you running your video off an esata drive that isn’t your OS drive? It’s important for playback to not be contending with the OS for drive access. And USB drives for HD are not sufficient, I’ve found with my Panny 150 footage. I assume you are using either internal or external eSatat but…you know what assume stands for…(G).

Also, I’ve found that the larger size memory graphics cards, are more useful for fluid dual monitor situations, more than for Vegas. I’ve worked successfully with both 512 and 1 MB. But these days, 1MB, especially for other packages other than Vegas, are really not that much more expensive.

    Best of luck.

June 9, 2010 at 7:21 am in reply to: Vegas 32 Bit or 64 Bit (On Windows 7 64 Bit)

I’ve been using the 64 bit version on both a laptop (4GB RAM, quadcore, by Samsung) and an HP dual quadcore w/8 GBs RAM, and Vegas 64 bit. I accidentally downloaded the 32 bit at one point and had lots of out of memory and other crashes, but have not had crashes on either machine since I downloaded the 64 bit version. I use AVCHD (HMC 150) and the Canon T2i (MOV), and usually but not always transcode with Neoscene. All in all, no crashes, no problems, and I am not really *pushing* the envelope with Vegas. I have watched perfmon while rendering and never use more than about 4GBs RAM (on desktop machine).

So I would say, get a quad core, at least 4GBs RAM (unless you are doing animation, etc.) and Pro 64. Seems to work. The Samsung comes with a Read only Blu Ray. Very nice…

June 1, 2010 at 5:57 pm in reply to: OT? Map needed for video. Where to find?

Thanks. I also found a few, including one that might work, at this site:
    https://www.pond5.com/stock-footage/575352/zooming-into-washington-america.html

The $40 price tag is nice also.

Unfortunately a friend of mine who is another local videographer used a similar (maybe the same) video map on her last production! Oh well. Probably better than none at all.

Well, I got the iMovie upgrade and Shane, you should probably stop recommending iMovie unless the person wants to do a start at some major city and end at another city flight map. It does not have maps of, say Washington State, just global flight maps. Cool for some, even me occassionaly. But totally useless for what I wanted, but, it was cheap because I already owned it and the upgrade was cheap.

I’ve not yet found the right thing. But have found a lot of wrong things.

Hope someone has some better ideas for me. I’ll keep looking.

Yes, I checked out this feature, (I don’t have iMovie yet, but saw a few Youtube demos). I’m unclear as to whether this will have the detail of the northern Washington State coast I need (that Strait of Juan De Fuca is what I’m illustrating in the video). Maybe I could use Vancouver BC as the point of reference. I doubt Sequim or Port Angeles would be listed. (anyone out there with it know?) It would appear it’s pretty high level of areas of the globe and major locations (only 4000) that people chiefly go to.

I don’t mind buying iMovie, heck it has some cool features, and maps are one of them, but I’m looking for something between Google Earth and a more detailed iMovie. I might run over to the Apple store if it’s open tomorrow and buy iLife to get it. worth having it in the toolbox.

I’m not worried about whether iMovie won’t look “pro enough”. given the project I think it would work just fine.

May 24, 2010 at 2:51 pm in reply to: Sony Vegas Pro 9.0 Problem

Thx Mike. Yes, I would assume that the video stutter *might* be helped by having a miminum of graphics RAM (say 512MB), but maybe it doesn’t matter, which would be odd given the amount of bits that HD is needing to push out to display full def (i.e. I am thinking about it’s need for true blue ray to display full hd, but then again, I might be wrong).

My experience so far with 64 bit is that it is more the answer for HD footage than anything else in the toolkit. Given Vegas’ ability to run both versions on the same machine, for use of older software needs, and it’s ability to use large RAM w/64 bit, they have the ability to be on top of things. Now if this persistent question about bugs in 9.0e will be resolved, they should have a quite nice product. I assume the e problems will be solved soon, as software development can be a real challenge. MS has been working on 64 bit since the 90s and just now is really getting it *right*. (I remember them developing it for DEC back then).
