  • Vegas 32 Bit or 64 Bit (On Windows 7 64 Bit)

    Hi All,

First post here, so please bear with me. I am about to purchase Sony Vegas Pro 9 for my new laptop, and I was wondering what each person’s experience was with the 32 and 64 bit versions, respectively. I have a 64 bit laptop (Intel i7), and Windows 7 64 Bit.

    Here’s what I’m wondering:
I’ve heard that most of the codecs and plugins for the 32 bit version don’t work for the 64 bit one. Is this true? How bad is it (i.e. are these very specialized codecs and plugins, or prominent/important ones)?
Is there a substantial speed/performance increase using the 64 bit version, especially on an i7, which, as I understand it, is a quad core?
I have heard that the 64 bit version is substantially buggier than the 32 bit one and crashes a lot. Is this true?

I’d greatly appreciate any input you could offer.

    Thanks,
    Nick

I’ve been using the 64 bit version on both a laptop (4GB RAM, quadcore, by Samsung) and an HP dual quadcore w/8 GBs RAM, and Vegas 64 bit. I accidentally downloaded the 32 bit at one point and had lots of out of memory and other crashes, but have not had crashes on either machine since I downloaded the 64 bit version. I use AVCHD (HMC 150) and the Canon T2i (MOV), and usually but not always transcode with Neoscene. All in all, no crashes, no problems, and I am not really *pushing* the envelope with Vegas. I have watched perfmon while rendering and never use more than about 4GBs RAM (on desktop machine).

So I would say, get a quad core, at least 4GBs RAM (unless you are doing animation, etc.) and Pro 64. Seems to work. The Samsung comes with a Read only Blu Ray. Very nice…

The fx packages you have may not work in the 64 bit version of Vegas if they are not 64 bit fx’s. That has been my issue with the 64 bit version. Also, Cinescore does not function as a plugin in the 64 bit version. I use standard codecs so no issue there and the majority of my fx that I use are compatible. However, I wish the noise reduction from Sound Forge would work in 64 bit Vegas.

With that being said, I only run 64 bit Vegas on my laptop (core i7) and it works very well. If I want to use Cinescore I just fire it up as a standalone, pick my music, change what I want and render it out to length. So no real issue there.

On my desktop (dual quad core proc’s) I run both 32 bit and 64 bit. I have no issues with either in relation to your question.

By the way, you can install and run both versions (if you buy one, you will get a license for both).

    Thanks for the advice!

Do you (or does anyone) know if Sony plans to make Cinescore work with the 64 bit version of Vegas in a subsequent release?

As for running both, can one seamlessly switch between versions within the same project? Are there any compatibility issues?

Also, Jeremy, I am curious, in your experience, how does the speed of the 32 and 64 bit versions compare on your desktop? Are there any processes for which the 64 bit “feels faster,” so to speak?

Sorry for potentially stupid questions, and thanks for bearing with me.

Cinescore is no more. No more future releases and no compatibility for 64 bit. However, Sony has said that they are working on the next generation replacement for Cinescore.

The biggest benefit for me for using 64 bit is that I can use all my RAM instead of just 3.x gigs. I don’t really have any “wow!” moments going from 32 to 64 as both work really well for me.

Yes you can open your projects seamlessly between 32 and 64, but you need to take note that any fx you apply that are not 64 bit compatible will fail to load in your 64 bit version.
