  • 512mb GDDR5 or 1GB GDDR3 memory video card for Vegas?

    Hello,
I’m editing 1080p AVCHD footage with vegas pro 9. I’ve been using my on onboard graphics and it’s not working out very well. I’m looking at a cheap videocard in the $100 range. I’m looking at 2 cards with the same Nvidia chipset(240). One has 512mb of GDDR5 and the other with 1gb GDDR3. Which is better for Vegas editing and rendering? The faster memory or more memory?
    Thanks everyone!

Vegas does not use the video card at all, for either playback or rendering. It utilizes the CPU for both. If you want faster rendering speeds, be sure to turn your RAM allotment for preview to 1MB, this allows Vegas to use more memory for rendering! Also, you may look into another CPU or more ram if it is not a quad core or better. Dual cores are reasonable, if you are not doing HDV.

What Scott says is true. However, Sony just announced AVCHD enhanced rendering with CUDA enabled video cards for the consumer versions of Sony Vegas (not Vegas Pro). So, one could assume that Vegas pro 10 will include this feature as well. So, if you are going to be buying a video card, you might want to get one that supports CUDA.

you might want to get one that supports CUDA.

…and Adobe requires a CUDA card with at least 768MB of memory so I would go for the 1GB card in case you ever want to use After Effects or other 3rd part CUDA enabled tool.

Pete, a quick basic question. Are you running your video off an esata drive that isn’t your OS drive? It’s important for playback to not be contending with the OS for drive access. And USB drives for HD are not sufficient, I’ve found with my Panny 150 footage. I assume you are using either internal or external eSatat but…you know what assume stands for…(G).

Also, I’ve found that the larger size memory graphics cards, are more useful for fluid dual monitor situations, more than for Vegas. I’ve worked successfully with both 512 and 1 MB. But these days, 1MB, especially for other packages other than Vegas, are really not that much more expensive.

    Best of luck.
