OT? Map needed for video. Where to find?
Posted by Al Bergstein on May 31, 2010 at 4:00 amNeeding to add a decent map for my video. Anyone got some favorites map sites for getting a good map done relatively inexpensively? I’ve seen some slightly animated stuff in the past, not Google, but similar to it without all the world detail. Not sure what’s the best path. Normal Google search led me to rather bland stuff, more suitable for a powerpoint presentation.
Also, is there a better forum to post to?

May 31, 2010 at 4:08 amUse iMovie…
https://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/#hollywood
Then export the QT file and import into FCP.

May 31, 2010 at 4:40 amYes, I checked out this feature, (I don’t have iMovie yet, but saw a few Youtube demos). I’m unclear as to whether this will have the detail of the northern Washington State coast I need (that Strait of Juan De Fuca is what I’m illustrating in the video). Maybe I could use Vancouver BC as the point of reference. I doubt Sequim or Port Angeles would be listed. (anyone out there with it know?) It would appear it’s pretty high level of areas of the globe and major locations (only 4000) that people chiefly go to.
I don’t mind buying iMovie, heck it has some cool features, and maps are one of them, but I’m looking for something between Google Earth and a more detailed iMovie. I might run over to the Apple store if it’s open tomorrow and buy iLife to get it. worth having it in the toolbox.
I’m not worried about whether iMovie won’t look “pro enough”. given the project I think it would work just fine.

May 31, 2010 at 4:43 amYeah, true. Dunno if I’d use it for a broadcast doc though. Hmmm…
The software I used at one point cost…well, A LOT. $10,ooo. And was complicated. We sold it. But now I use After Effects, well, our graphics guy does. And they use maps they bought from somewhere.

May 31, 2010 at 6:01 amMaps for video, the less details has, the best.
Most of the time I do it my self or I simplify others maps.

Was it Curious Maps? There were bought out by VizRT, which also falls under the category of complicated and expensive.https://vizrt.com/products/article231.ece

June 1, 2010 at 12:52 amWell, I got the iMovie upgrade and Shane, you should probably stop recommending iMovie unless the person wants to do a start at some major city and end at another city flight map. It does not have maps of, say Washington State, just global flight maps. Cool for some, even me occassionaly. But totally useless for what I wanted, but, it was cheap because I already owned it and the upgrade was cheap.
I’ve not yet found the right thing. But have found a lot of wrong things.
Hope someone has some better ideas for me. I’ll keep looking.

June 1, 2010 at 2:29 pmCheck out NASA’s website for maps. They are public domain and they have some high resolution TIFF files you can download.

June 1, 2010 at 3:15 pmI’ve used this website: https://www.mapresources.com/ They have vector maps of just about anywhere. The maps are very detailed, but if you have Adobe Illustrator, you can turn off the layers you don’t need to simplify them. They are vector maps, so you need Photoshop or something similar to rasterize them for FCP.

June 1, 2010 at 5:57 pmThanks. I also found a few, including one that might work, at this site:
https://www.pond5.com/stock-footage/575352/zooming-into-washington-america.htmlThe $40 price tag is nice also.
Unfortunately a friend of mine who is another local videographer used a similar (maybe the same) video map on her last production! Oh well. Probably better than none at all.
