Select “full-color” instead of “greyscale” as the input option if you want to preserve the colors of the particle image.

Also, if you’re using pI3 with OS X 10.5, you’ll need the particleIllusion QuickLook plugin in order to get the previews of project and emitter library files in particleIllusion (and also in Finder).

Only needed if you are running pI3 (not SE) on 10.5. Not needed on earlier OS X versions and won’t install on them anyway.

I’ll whip something together — maybe over the holiday weekend. I’d really like to do a video tutorial every 2 weeks, but I’m finding it impossible to stick to that schedule right now. Maybe I need to do more “freeform” tutorials, where I just record whatever I do… we’ll see.

Elvis and Aharon have both decided to boycott this forum until the AE plugin is ready. Just kidding — they are both crazy-busy these days with various projects. Elvis hasn’t had the time to fire up particleIllusion in months I think I remember him saying recently.

Ok, I’ve finally got the lower third example project together.

The key is using an image’s alpha channel to define the lower third area along with the “stencil” layer transparency option. You should be able to figure it out by analyzing the project file.

    particleIllusion 3.0 only.

Search using your favorite webseach site “Lagarith codec”. Also “huffyuv codec”.

It’s pretty much the same technique, just make the area emitter cover the entire frame. I suggest cranking the “number” property as low as possible before increasing the width and height though. Then move the “number” up in small increments until you get a balance between coverage and performance. You may need to increase the size of the particles too.

Then animate a force object across the particles to “blow” them away.

If you want the frame to disintegrate from one edge, not all at one time, then use a more narrow area emitter, and have it move across the stage.

Hope that’s enough detail to get you started.

The key here is in the image sequence you’ll use for the paper. You can’t just load a single image of paper — it will have to be animated in some way to provide some complex motion.

Take a look at some of the “feather” emitters in particleIllusion (search using particleView) for an example of what I mean.

You could also take a look at the “confetti” emitters (again search with particleView).

We’ve got a project file that we used a few years ago for our in-booth demos at tradeshows, but it’s actually quite simple if you’ve got access to After Effects or any other application that can create “masks” (which is pretty much all of them, isn’t it?)

You create a mask for the lower third “strip” (whatever shape you want). Then you can just load any particleIllusion-rendered footage you want. There are so many emitters that are perfect for “animated backgrounds” I don’t even know where to start naming them. (Try doing a search in particleView for “light” or “dots” as a start.)

If you don’t have an application that does masking, the project file we had used particleIllusion to create the mask from an image. Not as flexible as using your app’s mask features, but it worked. I may be able to find this project file and upload it somewhere if there’s enough interest.

You can’t activate the demo version. Just email wondertouch support and we’ll send you the download link.

particleIllusion does not save GIF files. Save as PNG, then use another application to convert to GIF.
