I suspect you’re interpreting the footage wrong in your NLE.

In pI, uncheck the “remove black background” option when you save output with alpha channel.

If that’s not the problem, please post an example of the poorly rendered output.

particleIllusion can’t do any transparent water effects. If you have to be able to see through the water, pI can’t do it. So those water “blob” effects can’t be done in pI.

Aren’t the “eye” effects just other pI effects (sparkles for instance) applied to eyes? I don’t see anything that makes these specifically “eye” effects.

I think there are already lots of good “shield” effects. Launch particleView and search for “diony”. There are at least three libraries he contributed to containing lots of different “magic” effects.

  • If you’re pulling shapes in at 128×128, you must be using movies as the source, or long image sequences, right? There’s no other way to get 100MB libraries.

I would shoot for 50MB as a maximum library size, unless you have 100MB libraries that don’t cause any problems for you.

The “library backups” folder is in the particleIllusion application folder.

Tom thanks you. We’re still looking for ideas for the fall library, which should be out around the end of October.

Yes, we stopped selling SE several months ago. If you’re unhappy with that decision, please send an email to sales at genarts dot com and let us know how you feel!

The bottom two are not video tutorials, but they’re good. They’re worth looking at, even though if you’re like me you really want to watch a video instead of read.

I guess I should make a similar tutorial in video format.

I don’t know what water shield effects are. Same goes for premonition and “eye” effects. Can you point me to some YouTube videos that show what you mean by these?

  • Your emitter libraries are MUCH too large! If my libs get over 100MB I get nervous.

When you import a shape image, always use the smallest size that you can. If you’re importing an image of a bubble for instance because you want to create carbonation bubbles in a soft drink for example, don’t import your bubble image at 1024 x 1024. Since they’re going to be drawn very small anyway, choose 128 x 128. Also, if you import a very long sequence of images to use as a shape, it will eat memory very quickly. Make sure you actually need all of the frames you’re importing.

Finally, note that a library can contain a lot of shapes that are not used by any of the emitters. It’s a good idea to delete those from the library if your libs are getting too large.

Oh, one more thing, especially when you’ve been editing large emitter libraries a lot: check the “library backups” folder. It could be wasting lots of hard drive space storing multiple backups that you don’t need.

Lower thirds you mean? If you could find some example videos somewhere for me to use as reference, that would be helpful.

October 4, 2012 at 2:32 pm in reply to: Missile trail

There are several smoke emitters that do this already.

    1) Make sure you’ve downloaded ALL of the emitter libraries

    2) Open particleView (a separate application installed with particleIllusion) and hit the “S” key to open the search window.

    3) Search for “smoke” or “jet” or “smoke trail” or something like that. If that doesn’t work, try “trail” or “meteor” or “missile”.

You should find so many smoke emitters you’ll have a hard time choosing.
