Why do you want to make it a super emitter? Making it a super emitter will make it lose the “whirlpool” look you want.

Have you looked at the existing “twister” or “tornado” emitters? The tornado ones are in the Dec 2005 lib (emitters_05_12).

No, not directly. Here’s what you can do though: using another app, combine your 2 layers of footage into 1 layer of footage, using the color channels from one and the alpha channel from another.

Then use this new single footage layer in particleIllusion, with “get color from layer” and “get transparency from layer” checked. You can turn off the bg footage when rendering.

    I think that will work.

I really need more of a description than this, or even better an image or movie for reference.

  • The framerate of the preview window that you’re changing is just that — the framerate for the preview window. To change the project framerate, use the Project Settings dialog.

If you want the effect to slow down, don’t decrease the project framerate — increase it (so it’s slower when played back at 30 fps).

I’m not sure about the brightness issue — just change the “visibility” value in the hierarchy window (don’t open the properties dialog) so you see the changes in the stage window immediately.

You’ve got it backwards — the Mac version already loads AE7 data fine; it’s the Windows version that doesn’t.

March 29, 2007 at 12:19 pm in reply to: organizing emitter libraries

When making major changes to libraries (as you are), I usually do it a little at a time. This seems to avoid the corruption problem (which we’ve never been able to duplicate when looking for it). What do I mean by “a little at a time”?

    1) Open the Library Manager
    2) Add all (or some) of the emitters you want. You can create new folders too if needed.
    3) Save the library, or even close the Library Manager.
    4) Load another library.
    5) Load the first library again. This is to detect corruption at the earliest point.
    6) Repeat steps 2-5 until you have all of the emitters in the library you want.

    7) If emitters need to be put into different places in the same library, drag them around now.
    8) Do steps 4 and 5

    Etc.

The point is to save the library often, and load a different library, then reload the library you are working on.

If you get a corruption, you can use the latest backup in the “library backups” folder — just copy it out of that folder and remove the “.bak” extension.

[Steve Thompson] “Maybe my graphics card doesn’t like things. Not sure. It’s an ATI. I used to have an NVidia card and never seemed to have these problems.”

Aha! I don’t know if I’ve posted it here recently, but 90%+ of the crashes that people have with the Windows version are due to OpenGL problems (video driver issues) and are usually fixed by getting updated drivers from your video card manufacturer’s website. You can test this by using “run with software rendering” or turning off hardware acceleration in the pIllusion preferences dialog — if the problem goes away with (slow) software rendering, then it is a video driver issue.

Yes, I almost always edit emitters in the stage, then “Add to Library”, unless there are small changes I what to make to existing library emitters.

My point was, it sounded like you could open the properties dialog for the library when you double-click certain emitters in the library, but not others. If so, then you should get the library properties dialog open however you could, then select the emitter you want to change once it’s open.

If I understand this correctly, if you open the properties dialog for the library emitters (by double-clicking an emitter in the library window), it does crash with 03 and 05, but doesn’t crash for 04?

Why not just double-click one that does not crash, then select the one you want in the hierarchy once the properties dialog opens?
