I also should have mentioned the differences. KONA 3X/3 includes features not found on the KONA LH, such as:

– 10-bit hardware-based SD-to-HD Up-conversion.
– 10-bit hardware-based HD-to-HD Cross-conversion.
– 16-channel embedded audio.
– 8-channel AES audio (2-channel on the LH/LHe).
– Dual-link SDI support, including 4:4:4.
– 2K support, via HSDL in/out, and realtime (positionable cropped) playout of 2K to 1080psf and (downconverted) SD video.

…the KONA LH/LHe, on the other hand, offers analog SD/HD inputs that are not found on the KONA 3X/3.

*NEW KONA 3X*

We are pleased to announce a PCI-X version of the incredibly popular KONA 3, the KONA 3X.

KONA 3X is available now, in stock and ready to ship.

KONA 3X is identical to the KONA 3 in terms of function and cabling, its only difference being it is a PCI-X 133 card, whereas the KONA 3 is a 4-lane PCIe (PCI Express) card. KONA 3X is perfect for use in PCI-X Apple G5 systems, as well as with the new Apple XServe (with the addition of an optional Apple bracket, see below).

Again, all of the features found on the KONA 3 are identical to what is found on the KONA 3X. The best way to think of it is it is the PCI-X version of KONA 3, with all of the same features, cabling, and K3-BOX options. Now, G5 owners can have features previously only found on the Mac Pro and PCIe G5’s via the KONA 3, such as HD to HD cross-conversion, 2K HSDL I/O, real 2K workflows, 1080p/60, and HD video+key.

KONA 3X can also be used in the new Intel-based Xserve’s, bringing all of its unique features to that platform. The new Xserve can be configured with an optional PCI-X adapter. *KONA 2 DISCONTINUED*

Effective immediately, the KONA 2 is discontinued and not available for purchase. It has been replaced by the new and more powerful KONA 3X.

Of course, KONA 2 will continue to be fully supported by AJA, and units will remain in our inventory for any service issues, etc.

Upon it’s introduction, KONA 2 represented a major step forward in editing on the Mac. Now, KONA 3 and KONA 3X are the new standard by which all other cards are measured!

Hi Simon,

In addition to Jeremy’s comments, you will need to also set the KONA Control Panel to down-convert the incoming HD signal. Go to the “Format” tab, and on the given SDI input, set the Primary format as your destination SD format (such as 525i or 625i). The Secondary would be your native incoming HD format (1080i, etc.).

Hi Dolly,

If I may, I can offer you a few things that make the KONA LHe unique:

– DVCPRO-HD hardware acceleration. KONA LHe does the scaling work involved with FCP using this codec (this feature being jointly developed between Apple and AJA) thereby freeing the Mac Pro’s CPU’s from this task, so they can do other things, like more RT!

– HDV hardware acceleration. (see above, but for HDV playback in FCP).

– Dynamic RT Extreme hardware acceleration. (see above, for Dynamic RT Extreme in FCP).

– 10-bit hardware-based HD to SD Downconversion. AJA downconverion (as with any of our conversions) are done in hardware, which means it is codec agnostic, can be always-on, can be applied to any input or output, and is of a pristine broadcast quality. The down-converter works with 1080 and 720 material, all in hadrware (and again not tying up the CPU’s with this task).

– KL-BOX breakout box option. This is a 1RU robust breakout box, that offers convenience as well as additional connectivity. It comes with a 1-meter thether cable, but an incredible 5-meter thether cable is also available! The KL-BOX-LH is only $299 US.

– 3-years of AJA Tech Support, which includes Advanced Exchange!

OSX opens and creates Zip files natively. Also, the newer drivers from AJA come archived in .tar archives, which are also native to 10.4 OSX.

Is the SD media already digitzed on disk? If so, was it done with a XENA, and with what file type (QT, AVI, etc.)? If not, what card digitized it, and what codec is it in?
