price difference between Kona LH and Kona 3X?

If the price difference is even as much as $1000 – if you have to upconvert from SD to HD, the price is unimportant. If you have no money, and do a lot of Beta and composite video work, the converters to change Beta to SD would cost more than $1000 – so you are better off sticking with the Kona LH.

If you are working in HD (not HDV), this means that you have big money projects, and can afford a HD VTR and a HD monitor. At this point, the price of the card becomes unimportant, and so you can afford the extra money for the Kona 3X. However, if you have no money, you probably can’t afford an HD VTR (other than HDV or P2), and so you should stick with the Kona LH, which is more suited for analog products, anyway.

listen Mr. Smartie Pants – there is a big difference working with material that came from a crew that shot with a Varicam, and you are editing with a Panasonic AJ-HD1200A or AJ-HD1400 (or HD Cam) – and a crew that shot with a Sony Z1U or Panasonic HVX200, and is using an HDV VTR (like the 10 or the 25) to edit with.

If these two workflows are the same budget – then YOU are doing something wrong with your business model.

I also should have mentioned the differences. KONA 3X/3 includes features not found on the KONA LH, such as:

– 10-bit hardware-based SD-to-HD Up-conversion.
– 10-bit hardware-based HD-to-HD Cross-conversion.
– 16-channel embedded audio.
– 8-channel AES audio (2-channel on the LH/LHe).
– Dual-link SDI support, including 4:4:4.
– 2K support, via HSDL in/out, and realtime (positionable cropped) playout of 2K to 1080psf and (downconverted) SD video.

…the KONA LH/LHe, on the other hand, offers analog SD/HD inputs that are not found on the KONA 3X/3.
