AJA Kona 3X for PCI-X machines
Posted by Walter Biscardi on February 21, 2007 at 11:15 pmAnybody else notice this? I didn’t realize AJA has released the Kona 3 for PCI-X machines so all you folks on the older G5’s out there, you can get all the added benefits of the Kona 3.
Very cool, nice move AJA, especially bringing the HD Cross Conversion feature to the PCI-X machines.

February 21, 2007 at 11:23 pmtalk about not telling anyone. I just saw this as the LAST LINE on the description of the Kona 3 product info.
Well, I guess the Kona 2 is over.

I was looking at the support page to see if it said anything about FCP 5.1.3 and I saw they had drivers for a Kona 3X. Yep, Kona 2 is not there any longer, but then the 3X would have been a duplicate product anyway.
I think it’s great that folks who really wanted the Kona 3 features but wanted to remain on PCI-X for a while longer have the option now.

February 22, 2007 at 2:18 amHi All,
Sorry! This slipped through the cracks…we forgot to post here on the Cow! Here’s what we should have posted last week:
*NEW KONA 3X*
We are pleased to announce a PCI-X version of the incredibly popular KONA 3, the KONA 3X.
KONA 3X is available now, in stock and ready to ship.
KONA 3X is identical to the KONA 3 in terms of function and cabling, its only difference being it is a PCI-X 133 card, whereas the KONA 3 is a 4-lane PCIe (PCI Express) card. KONA 3X is perfect for use in PCI-X Apple G5 systems, as well as with the new Apple XServe (with the addition of an optional Apple bracket, see below).
Again, all of the features found on the KONA 3 are identical to what is found on the KONA 3X. The best way to think of it is it is the PCI-X version of KONA 3, with all of the same features, cabling, and K3-BOX options. Now, G5 owners can have features previously only found on the Mac Pro and PCIe G5’s via the KONA 3, such as HD to HD cross-conversion, 2K HSDL I/O, real 2K workflows, 1080p/60, and HD video+key.
KONA 3X can also be used in the new Intel-based Xserve’s, bringing all of its unique features to that platform. The new Xserve can be configured with an optional PCI-X adapter. Detailed Apple part numbers and setup information can be found in the KONA 3X Read-Me supplied in the box, as well as here for your convenience:

*KONA 2 DISCONTINUED*
Effective immediately, the KONA 2 is discontinued and not available for purchase. It has been replaced by the new and more powerful KONA 3X.
Of course, KONA 2 will continue to be fully supported by AJA, and units will remain in our inventory for any service issues, etc.
Upon it’s introduction, KONA 2 represented a major step forward in editing on the Mac. Now, KONA 3 and KONA 3X are the new standard by which all other cards are measured!

February 23, 2007 at 1:46 amWill this work on a first gen Dual 2 gig G5? My machine is 3 years old but still going strong on an I/O. I am looking to add Kona power for HD work, can this work in my existing machine?

According to the “Read Me First” it will work with any Dual G5 with a PCI-X Slot. I believe only the very first Dual G5’s do NOT have this slot.

February 23, 2007 at 6:36 amAJA How about a trade-up program?
How about a trade-in credit for a longtime Kona then Kona2 user?
My Kona 2 works fine now, but wouldn’t mind taking advantage of some the great features found in Kona 3.Doesn’t hurt to ask
🙂

February 23, 2007 at 9:50 pmAJA will agree to do this, as soon as Apple agrees to “trade up” PCI-X computers for newer PCI-Express computers like the MAC Pro.
Fair ?

COOL! So I’ll send in my LH and get a Kona 3, and send in my Dual 2Ghz and get a Mac Pro, and send in my middle aged wife and….
Oh nevermind. I am quite happy with all of the above…
