If you bought your AJA KONA 3 from a qualified and authorized dealer, they should have really asked you what you wanted to use the device for – apologies if this did not happen. As I understand it, you want to ingest material from the HDV camera you own which only has component analog output. If this is the case, yes, you would need an analog to digital converter, such as the AJA HD10AVA as noted, to get the analog signal into the KONA 3 product. Second, if you did purchase your AJA product from an authorized reseller within the last thirty days, then they will likely be willing to exchange the KONA 3 for the new AJA KONA LHi product which has analog input as well as the upconversion capability and is priced below the MSRP of the Matrox MXO2 product.

Nothing could have made for a more bittersweet NAB for all of us at AJA… Like others have said, he looked in high spirits on Sunday – he was excited about the show and the new products… and then he was gone. We will all miss him very, very much…

While we put out an “In Memoriam” notice and flowers in our booth at NAB, we are also talking with others about contributing to a memorial scholarship in Michael’s name… he was not only a great person, but a great educator as well and so this seems particularly appropriate. We are awaiting details from his family regarding this, but I would encourage all of you who are interested to particpate in supporting this should it happen.

Hard to even talk about this now without some tears… but Michael always made us laugh, and he left us happy – that youthful exuberance of his was always contagious… and though he left us far, far too soon, he will not be forgotten.

Our sympathies to everyone in the community and most of all to his family.

Peter… I think the “I didn’t get a response” is exaggerated by the comparative time you might be posting your questions since you are on Australian time mate… we are doing our very best to answer questions in a timely fashion.

From the CML (Cinematograpy Mailing List) reply to your question posted by the AJA Product Manager regarding handheld work with the unit:

Peter C. – Handheld configuration is totally possible… in fact I was really excited to show it at NAB, but was over-ruled by my superiors because we are trying to communicate so much about the product here at NAB and I only had time to get a few low quality shots of myself with the unit shoulder mounted. I have images taken by a co-worker of me handholding the unit on my iPhone if anyone stops by the booth at NAB and can find me! Basically, using our Exoskeleton for the product, you invert the rod endplates, so that instead of mounting rod accessories to the unit as you do now, you mount Ki Pro to an existing set of rods and a baseplate/shoulder mount to place the unit above the bottom of the camera. In the end this very elegant actually and can somewhat transform small cameras with the “hold me at arms length and get tired easy because the camera is not properly on my shoulder design” to a viable shoulder design. In my initial testing, I use a Zacuto universal baseplate, simple shoulder pad and a follow focus as a grip for my left side (I’d want that piece anyhow!) to achieve what I’m describing. But a picture is worth a thousand words, so wait for the professional photos – not an iPhone image of me- to see how nice this actually can be… particularly with your A.C. using the iPhone or iPod Touch to arm your recording – even set your clip name – while you keep the camera on your shoulder… as a camera operator/1st A.C./D.P. I am pretty excited to go shoot with beta units handheld after NAB is over!

Our plugins for Adobe Production Premium CS3 apps will be a separate download, set to be released very soon. The release of our v6.0 KONA driver software needed to happen first, as the new Adobe OSX application plugins require it.

Hi,

The Io HD, and the orginal Io’s, all require that they are the only device on the FireWire bus when in operation. This is on desktop machines, and laptops. Even though a MacPro or MacBook Pro may have multiple FW400 and/or FW800 ports, they are all being operated off the same bus. Therefore, a second bus must be established to connect additional FireWire peripherals, including FW storage.

All of these options are covered in the manual, on page 6 of the Io HD manual, which is available here:
