May 20, 2011 at 8:39 pm in reply to: Capture in 23.98 in SD

525i 23.98 is listed as an “intermediate format only” because it is not an “over-the-wire” format and frame rate. This means that video monitors would not be able to receive this format and frame rate (they expect NTSC video at 525i 29.97).

You could elect to use the AJA Control Panel to configure a conversion from 1080PsF 23.98 to 525i 23.98. You would accomplish this by setting the Primary Format in the Control Panel to 525i 23.98 and the Secondary Format to 1080PsF 23.98; incoming video would be downconverted if the source was 1080PsF 23.98. (Note: you may need to adjust your Capture Presets and Device Control Preset accordingly so that the timecode values in the recorded file accurately reflect the source timecode values.)

If you need monitoring from the 525i 23.98 video, the KONA 3 can upconvert the signal to 1080PsF 23.98. There are even Easy Setups for NTSC 23.98 video supplied by AJA as part of the Additional Easy Setups.

If you have additional questions, feel free to contact AJA Technical Support for assistance.

May 18, 2011 at 11:42 pm in reply to: Trouble with the Aja 3g box.

You might want to review what type of video format/frame rate you are outputting from the KONA 3G via HDMI and compare that to what the Samsung TV supports. Keep in mind that your HDMI monitor is unlikely to support PsF formats (you will likely need to send the monitor true progressive). Additionally, some consumer monitors simply do not support certain frame rates, such as 1080p 23.98, when compared to more professional monitors.

You may wish to contact AJA Technical Support for assistance with your KONA 3G and HDMI monitor configuration. They can be reached free of charge via phone or email:

If you are experiencing a delay or sluggishness with the web UI interactions, you might want to review your configuration and make changes to produce optimal results. For optimal results, you might wish to use a static IP address (as opposed to DHCP) and either the Safari or Firefox web browsers.

The Ki Pro and Ki Pro Mini both provide alarms for low media capacity and for full media. These alarms are detailed on page 28 of the version 2.5 Ki Pro Mini Manual:
    —-
“WARNING Media Low” will appear when the media only has 15% of capacity remaining. Media must be switched out when it reaches 10% of capacity. With 10% of media remaining, the “WARNING Media Full” prompt will appear.
    —-

If you have any additional operational questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact AJA Technical Support via phone or email for assistance.

  • AJA does provide Easy Setups so that you can capture to the DVCPRO HD codec. You may not have these easy setups installed on your system, however, because you elected to do a “Base” install when you first installed the AJA driver.

If you have the installer, you can run it again, elect not to install the driver and “Base” Easy Setups and just install the Additional Easy Setups you desire.

If you need assistance with this, please feel free to contact AJA Technical Support.

May 14, 2011 at 1:18 am in reply to: Aja Ki Pro Mini

We believe that the end user who experienced a gang recording issue experienced that issue because Ki Pro units as well as Ki Pro Mini units with differing firmware versions were used together. You should be able to properly use gang recording for Ki Pro Mini units (as opposed to a mix of Ki Pros and Ki Pro Minis) with matching firmware on all of the units; as an example, all units would use version 2.5 firmware. Recent testing of Ki Pro Mini units here at AJA shows that this is functioning as expected.

You should refer to the Ki Pro Mini Manual and documentation, but here are some helpful hints regarding gang recording:

    1) You will find it easiest to keep track of each Ki Pro Mini unit if you give it a distinct and unique name; in other words, for each Ki Pro Mini System Name, assign a name like “Camera 1” for one unit and “Camera 2” for another unit, etc.

    2) Only use static IP addresses for the units in the gang; using fixed IP addresses makes managing a group of units easier.

    3) Assign logical and unique IP addresses to each unit; the default static IP address for each unit “out of the box” is 192.168.0.2, so you may find it easiest to simply assign the second unit the IP address 192.168.0.3, etc.

    4) Use an ethernet hub/switch with basic functionality; some more advanced ethernet products have settings that, while helpful for handling data traffic in a facility, etc., aren’t as useful for this basic type of operation and may just create a layer of complexity that isn’t necessary.

    5) Using a timecode generator is advisable; simple, inexpensive timecode generators can be obtained from companies like Horita, etc. Along with the timecode generator, AJA also recommends using a simple and inexpensive timecode distribution amplifier for routing timecode to all of the Ki Pro Mini units.

    6) If you are planning on using a switcher/mixer as a video source (as opposed to a camera feed) for any of the Ki Pro Mini units, please be aware that some switchers/mixers, when switching signals, may cause the Ki Pro Mini to stop recording. Ki Pro Mini is designed to stop recording when a loss of video or format change is detected. Test the use of any switcher/mixer carefully and consider placing a frame sync in the path between a switcher/mixer and the Ki Pro Mini if you are using such a device as part of a multi-unit recording.

As with any configuration, it is good to test things prior to your event. If you have any questions or need clarification, don’t hesitate to contact AJA Technical Support for assistance.

May 13, 2011 at 11:40 pm in reply to: AF100 Audio Sync with Ki Pro Mini

The AJA Technical Support department has called you back regarding this matter and left you a voicemail. In addition to the original test that was performed, where no a/v sync issue was seen from a known synchronized SDI/analog audio source, AJA Technical Support also tested using our in-house Panasonic AG-AF100 camera. The results were as follows:

The audio discrepancy you are seeing may be related to a processing delay from the camera’s SDI output when compared to an analog audio source. This was tested using sync pops (color bars for visual and 1kHz tone for audio) one frame every one second for several minutes. The AG-AF100’s SDI output was connected to the Ki Pro Mini SDI input for video and a balanced analog audio signal from the same know synchronized source for the analog audio was sent directly to the Ki Pro Mini via balanced XLR analog audio input. The AG-AF100 was then pointed at this known synchronized audio/video so that the recorded video “pops” could be compared with the audio “pops.” The result was that the video was three frames later than the audio in the recording that was produced, much like what you have described.

In a second test, the AJA Technical Support department routed the analog audio to the AG-AF100 and then used the SDI out of the camera with embedded audio in addition to video. By using this signal path, the audio was found to be in sync. So, it would see that the camera has some processing delay for video and analog audio fed to the camera is compensated so that it is timed up to match the video output of the camera. Since this is the case, we would recommend that you route your analog audio from your mixer into the balanced analog XLR inputs on the AG-AF100 and the use the SDI video and audio from the camera to feed the Ki Pro Mini. This should not have any adverse effect on the quality of your audio.

Please note that not all cameras operate in this fashion; in many cases there is little – if any -delay in the output from a camera when compared to what the sensor was recording. Again, AJA Technical Support has tried to replicate your situation as accurately as possible to provide this information; their initial test was with a known synchronized audio/video source, but not the camera in question, which is why they could not replicate the behavior. Please feel free to contact them for additional clarification or assistance, but AJA hopes that this information will be helpful resolving your situation.

You may want to contact AJA Technical Support for assistance via phone or email.

It’s difficult to determine, based on the information provided, why you might not see analog video input. It could be a simple setting in the AJA Control Panel application, or Final Cut Pro, etc. that just needs to be set differently.
