January 8, 2014 at 2:18 am in reply to: KiPro Rack CLONE DISK?

The Ki Pro Rack does not offer the ability to clone a disk within the device. Cloning one KiStor to another KiStor may be accomplished if both units are connected to a host computer. A software utility, like Apple’s Disk Utility application, may be used to perform such a task.

December 16, 2013 at 11:20 pm in reply to: SD Video in Ki Pro Quad

The Ki Pro Quad accepts a wide variety of formats and frame rates, however standard definition video is not supported. For a complete list of formats and frame rates that are supported, please review the “Video Formats” section of the “Tech Specs” found on the AJA website:
    https://www.aja.com/en/products/ki-pro-quad#techspecs

If you want to continue working with SD video sources, you could consider using the AJA Ki Pro Quad in combination with an AJA UDC Up/Down/Cross Converter Mini-Converter. You may learn more about the UDC Mini-Converter here:

If you have any additional technical questions, please feel free to contact the AJA Technical Support department directly via phone or email between 9am and 5pm PST. They will be happy to answer any questions you might have:

October 30, 2013 at 6:43 pm in reply to: Ki Pro power

Typically, when you abruptly lose power during a recording, the file being written is not closed properly. In many of these cases the data may have been written to the media and it can be recovered.

If you see a file on the media, but you cannot open it using QuickTime Player, etc. then you may have the data, but the file is simply incomplete. One solution that AJA recommends if this is the case is Aeroquartet:

Please feel free to contact AJA Technical Support via phone or email for more assistance with this matter. AJA Technical Support is provided free of charge between 9am and 5pm PST Monday through Friday.

Based on what you have described, it sounds like a directory error occurred on the CompactFlash media. Perhaps you did not use the SLOT button to gracefully unmount the media before physically ejecting it from the Ki Pro Mini. If so, the CompactFlash directory may have been compromised. Typically, if the directory is compromised, it will automatically be repaired by Mac OS X when the media is first mounted by the operating system. However, in some cases the directory cannot be repaired simply by mounting the media in Mac OS X. In these cases, the directory may need more substantial repair requiring additional software tools and analysis.

The “Backup and Reformat” prompt appears on the Ki Pro Mini when compromised media is inserted. This is another clue suggesting that the media may have not been properly removed from the Ki Pro Mini or there was an issue with the FW800 CompactFlash card reader that was being used with the CompactFlash media.

Again, please feel free to contact AJA Technical Support to review your situation.

  • Since you are already in contact with AJA Technical Support, please continue to work with them directly regarding the various format and frame rate configurations you would like to use. Today a significant effort was made to investigate the issues you seem to have encountered when working with 2K at 59.94fps. We are now aware that there seems to be an issue with a specific feature when interacting with the Canon C500’s 2K p59.94 output; we are investigating this matter so you should stay in contact with AJA Technical Support for the latest details.

Regarding 4K 59.94fps, the Ki Pro Quad does not offer recording support for 4K (4096×2160) or Quad HD (3840×2160) at 59.94 fps. AJA made an effort to communicate this in several locations within the Ki Pro Quad documentation: pages 43, 59 and 89 of the v5.1 manual. We apologize if this wasn’t sufficiently clear in the documentation or in earlier correspondences you may have had with AJA Technical Support.

The Ki Pro Quad is used in various media markets with good success. The most notable example is the Saturday Night Live user story which has been featured in various media outlets and which can also be found on the AJA website here:
    https://www.aja.com/en/news/top-stories/34

We apologize for any inconvenience you have experienced thus far. Again, please feel free to continue working with AJA Technical Support; they are making an effort to resolve your issues.

The item that you mention was addressed with the latest Ki Pro firmware release, version 3.2. You can find the fix for the issue you seem to be describing listed in the release notes document here:
    https://www.aja.com/pdf/support/ReleaseNotes/KiPro/AJA_Ki_Pro_ReleaseNotes_v3.2.pdf

    Specifically:
    – Addressed an issue where SD video output could sometimes be disrupted.

If you have any additional questions or concerns about the Ki Pro, please feel free to contact AJA Technical Support via phone or email, Monday through Friday, between 9am and 5pm PST. They will be happy to assist you.

September 30, 2013 at 5:31 pm in reply to: KiPro and MXF

The AJA Ki Pro Mini and the AJA Ki Pro Rack offer support for three of the five families of Avid DNxHD. The AJA Ki Pro Mini and AJA Ki Pro Rack products offer support for the Avid DNxHD 220x family, Avid DNxHD 145 family and the Avid DNxHD 36 family (if a progressive or PsF video source is used). Page four of the Avid DNxHD Technology document, provided by Avid, gives good examples of the various attributes of the DNxHD families:
    https://www.avid.com/static/resources/US/documents/dnxhd.pdf

Note that unlike the Apple ProRes family of codecs, Avid DNxHD encoding does not provide support for standard definition video. If standard definition video is input and an Avid DNxHD encode type has been selected on the AJA Ki Pro Mini or the AJA Ki Pro Rack, a warning prompt will appear. On both the AJA Ki Pro Mini and the AJA Ki Pro Rack, the DNxHD encoded files are QuickTimes. MXF support is not provided at this time.

Avid DNxHD QuickTime files produced by the AJA Ki Pro Mini or AJA Ki Pro Rack devices are designed for use with Avid products such as Media Composer. To use the Avid DNxHD QuickTime files produced by the Ki Pro products in Avid Media Composer, AJA recommends using the “Link to AMA File(s)” feature provided in Avid Media Composer. These Avid DNxHD QuickTime files may also be read in a variety of other non-linear edit systems (when the appropriate Avid QuickTime codec package has been installed).

If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact AJA Technical Support directly via phone or email. Technical support is provided free of charge and is available Monday through Friday between 9am and 5pm PST:

September 23, 2013 at 5:15 pm in reply to: KiPro Drive Transfer Via Slimline sata

Ki Pro storage modules (KiStors) feature built-in connectors for connection to host computers. KiStors come in two varieties: one version uses a built-in FireWire 800 connection and the other version uses a built in USB 3.0 connection. Additionally, AJA offers the KiStor Dock which offers Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 connections to host computers. If you are not interested in the KiStor Dock, simply consider using the built-in connection on the KiStor.

The use of adapter cables plugged into the SATA connection of the KiStor is not supported and is strongly discouraged; some users have attempted to use inappropriate adapter cables and damaged the SATA connection, overloaded the power to the media, etc.

If you have additional questions about connecting a KiStor to a host computer, please feel free to contact AJA Technical Support via phone or email.
