December 19, 2011 at 10:21 am in reply to: New blog post from Philip Hodgetts. Worth the read.ignore me – that spew was a back from the pub rant at apple after having ranted with editors in the pub about apple.
I was pushing the ‘corporations if psychologically analysed, are found to be sociopaths’ line.. quite hard reading back on it there.

December 19, 2011 at 1:32 am in reply to: New blog post from Philip Hodgetts. Worth the read.[Jeremy Garchow] “X greatly streamlines the organization and prep phases, even getting to the first cut. Ironically, finishing is a slower process as the control isn’t quite there yet, and learning the new interface will cause some slow downs as we learn more and more efficiencies. I do find the first “80%” does go much faster, though.
“Since when was the act of editing a slice and dice best answered by a tool that does the three quarters tomato chopping and dicing?
how great a tool is that?
what in gods name? is the last 20%? useless? or the last 10%? or the last 5%?
remember here – that is defending utilitarian editing – on some level so does bill. although bill just appears to hate good editors more.
neither really care that this is brain damaged editing brought on to the main stage by cupertino – a crowd who couldn’t care if editing, design, craft or our entire community died by fire.
cupertino are the people being defended – not the software – cupertino – a group of people who would collectively sell your mother, her dog, and the dogs kennel down the river to make a single dollar.
that is apple. they only exist to make money. they have no other prerogative.
this – for once and for all – is not a professional piece of kit, its not meant to be, and amazingly it bears no relation to professional software. the metaphors are moronic, it is completely beholden to imovie, its not particularly well made, nobody in the horrible professional sphere can touch it – this software does not exist. The events are from iphoto, the magnetic timeline is from imovie, I’m really asking –
what. are. we. doing. here?
This software is not realistically discussed or employed professionally. Not on any scale anywhere. Its not. FCP is dead and we are left having a weird , truly heartfelt conversation courtesy of a black sociopathic fruit company that would see us all burn without a single blink.
everything else aside, apple are not good people.
Apple are not a good company. they are more than able to act in the psychological manner of every other modern corporation.
they lack empathy.
Apple are, in no way unusually, collectively, and as america’s biggest company, in the fashion of our times – sociopaths/psycopaths.
Apple became sociopaths a while ago.
It’s why we’re all so confused, we remember a lesser apple, it had smaller blood – but as corporations are/are not people – scale breeds psycopaths.
apples regard to duty of care for editing is near psychopathic in its complete disdain.
they have no emotional core. If they had a dog, it could be burnt in front of them and editing software is, relatively, a piece of toilet paper.
Apple are near flat out sociopaths at least. As an individual in operation, we are dealing with a sociopath. no empathy, no memory.
Apple are bad people.

yep, that’s totally reasonable, I don’t really have anything against itunes myself, but you do read a fair amount of bitching about the quality of the coding in it, mostly the windows version though – still – even gruber bitches about itunes in that way.
As you say though – they haven’t had much of a shot at rectifying this stuff yet. God knows we really, really are the beta testers on this thing.
The next two .1 updates should pretty conclusively indicate whether they’re actually up for this kind of thing anymore.http://www.ogallchoir.net

yes, in a sense, that is a very true point – this is an area that can be handsomely filled by third parties – my genuine concern at this point is about the structure and substructure of the application itself – as lawrence put it: we’re looking at multiple subsidence cracks appearing in a number of places relative to system performance, stability, the gob smacking file bloat when the project file is exposed to markers…
there’s two questions arising out of that – one – how structural could the flaws be? people are positing that the actual underlying database itself could be fundamentally flawed, I mean sure, maybe we could be looking at stuff that is super easy to fix, alternatively however, the number of springs falling out of this thing could indicate deep, extremely hard to rectify, basic structural errors in Apple’s approach.
the second thing is that if the situation is as serious as it may be – what confidence do we realistically have that Apple have anything like the wherewithal to remedy this? Given that they are the ones that just executed the software? Its been said a couple of times that there were real internal struggles in Apple over what the application was meant to be – and that at a certain point, a large part of the job of putting it together was handed over to the itunes software team. I don’t particularly like or respect itunes as software, and I don’t like the idea of them knocking out chunks of a fit for purpose video editing system.
I would stand here until doomsday bashing Apple – God knows – but on a certain genuine level I’m beginning to wonder if they still actually know what they are doing with this kind of software – if they actually still have at all the necessary skill set or basic competence to internally produce this class of software?

in use cases with multiple audio record stops and differing video record times it’s not really fit for purpose?
the feature is fairly badly put together and pretty poorly implemented. with automaticity to boot – no ability to calibrate it against failure.https://www.dvxuser.com/V6/archive/index.php/t-255063.html?s=01453ce10c7c2586112de794a7d03db6
It hands you this compound clip it thinks is perfect and the audio is all over the place. I have a case open with apple about this and they’re checking with their engineers. Thread here:
https://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?253834-Not-Syncing!
lets have another quote there:
“Well, that’s a bit of pain, I guess I’ll just have to sync one audio and video clip at a time”. But alas, that does not work either. If this were a stand alone plugin, people would be laughed at even saying they said they could sync via waveforms. Complete and utter BS. I expect better from FCP, why did they just not buy plural eyes, they apparently know how to sync via audio light years ahead of Apple’s false marketing. There should be like 5 asterisks after their syncing audio claims.Seriously considering returning because of this, unless I hear different from others.
Plural Eyes worked in a second with the same clips, but with out XML support, I can’t get a FCP 7 timeline into FCP X. Really, really, really disappointed. And user error, not likely, as Apple’s design philosophy does not believe in user errors.
for apple engineers.. read three guys moonlighting from the itunes team. a team who actually did apparently put together a lot of this editing software.
the thing we are having a hard time putting together is that apple are advertising features they have neither the skill nor the capacity to realistically put to market – audio sync fails, autosave fails, compound clips corrupt and bloat the project file, basic markers bloat the project file, timeline zoom kills the software as the thumbnail generation goes off the scale, background thumbnail generation of other projects bogs down the app, the skimmer half routinely freezes..
The essential point is that Apple no longer possess the basic competence required to produce mission critical software of this type.
they simply can no longer execute – at least not in house.
thunder clap-
there. is not. the in-house. Apple capacity. required to do any of this kind of stuff anymore.
God know this software mess about screams that fact.
It would **nearly be less painful** to the market if they just flat out threw up their hands and stopped trying.

[Craig Seeman] “Apple’s business model is to sell hardware. They are not a software company. They develop services and software to sell hardware.
“no Craig that is honestly wrong. Jobs said, on the record, with passion that they are a software company – they simply believe in sheathing their software in their own hardware.
That is currently a fundamental expression of Apple.Apple are now, in profit terms, overwhelmingly producing combined devices that are an expression of software and the enclosed hardware tweaked to within an inch of its life to drive that software.
it is not a brute effort to leverage some software to sell hardware – theirs is now a device model.
the question is whether apple have more than vestigal interest in niche areas, like legacy FCP, dependent on non-consumer behaviour with de-coupled relatively expensive hardware requirements.
(If they did choose to exit it, they… might still choose to make some easy, ongoing appstore prosumer cash selling the badge while they were at it?)
Apple make iPads, Apple make iPhones, Apple make iPods. (They also make beautiful hermetically sealed laptops).saying that sentence above, one is saying that apple make specific physical enclosures for highly optimised software use scenarios.
you’ve made your argument, I think, in order to validate the notion that FCPX is a true pro gambit to shift iron.
It is not. It is a near throwaway play for growing prosumer video behaviour on an installed consumer hardware platform they control via the appstore.
their research push here would match the accruing dollar value: and that is infinitesimal in their terms.
FCPX isn’t, in our terms, an honest endeavour for Apple, at best it’s tangential, it has about as much importance or validity as pages.
Apple are not, in any sense, an invested player in our space. FCPX represents near nothing strategically to them.its an end game hurrah – a radically reduced, tailored, throwaway prosumer product.
I would argue that FPCX and motion (that world beater) are the very last we will ever hear from Apple in the pro-space.
a few updates, whatever, and then there will just simply be no pro-apps. I’m saying 36 months? – for full titanic, with near dead software left lolling around.
FCX is now bedded down two floors above imovie, on the appstore – its not going anywhere. Whoever buys it whatever. If they hit a million users – they get three hundred million – like they actually care at this point. As I said – they could care more about the shape of a lozenge on iOS.
this software is the kiss off. Honestly Craig – Apple really and truly are done with this kind of thing.
they just do not care about any of this stuff.
I really do think that Apple are desperately trying to quietly walk away.

ha! well do you know – a little known fact – there are near to no Irish method actors, it’s a different style of craft they pursue.
try Neeson, Byrne, Kavanagh, McAanally, McCann, Gleeson – they’re on Olivier’s side:
“why don’t you try acting dear boy?”
As the man says: on the stage or the forum, the play is the thing.
