i don’t know. Just how crazy are Apple really? would it have been better if they had instantaneously destroyed all copies of FCP in existence, while simultaneously issuing a statement declaring an end to all editing? That it was over and we should all go away and think about it?
Apple are just nuts. To any sane professional, Apple look nuts at this point.

to be fair, they have good growth potential in this – ‘desktop’ right? – market.
It mightn’t have quite iOS numbers, but it’s worth pursuing right?.. OSX could build a nice, maybe quarter sized market share there?

There’s an extent to which they started going down the market-specific route with FCP. I see FCPX as a course correction, nothing more or less. Certainly NOT a deviation, but a return to what they’ve done from the beginning: create products that attempted to CHANGE markets, not to SERVE markets. Steve openly mocked companies who focused on markets and tried to build products for them.

that is problematic. those markets, like our market, are not consumer software purchase markets, ripe for re-making ala ipad, where consumer leisure experience acknowledges the worth of the new paradigm and migrates.
our markets, our market that Apple grew to dominate, from a single shop to a state broadcaster , these are livelihood dependant markets. Continuously, and financially, livelihood dependent markets. Christ: editing is a touch to touch craft wage check. You can’t just nuke the toolset for giggles.

God knows I’m sure its nothing but a hard fought coding effort, but the above sounds equivalent to trying to shoehorn something very strange and very square into a circular post production circle. Is it reasonable to presume that an entirely alien edit system is ever going to bed into broader production and post production given that almost no facility or broadcaster, no production house or employer of any description has shown any willingness to employ it as an edit system in the first place?
What rational basis is there for thinking that this will change? If the people that actually employ people to be editors will not touch this system, and they have thus far overwhelmingly shown that they will not, and if Apple will not relent on FCPX’s basic architecture, and they show no inclination of doing so, how is this system anything other than a smashed brick wall dead end? Apple can’t make employers use it, and its pretty obvious, from what Jordan and many others have said, that industry opinion and reaction, right up to its release, carried absolutely no weight with Apple. How do you possibly square this?
Unless I’m missing something, if FCPX resolutely remains FCPX, and the industry continues to leave it dead in the water, as it is currently doing, then Apple will have happily ceded command of all future paid media editing, with its attendant ecosystem of media transport and delivery, not to mention the hardware and software itself.
It’s nuts.

but thats not an opinion – those two products – office and windows account for 70% of microsofts revenue. Windows is about to try and be an embedded tablet OS, and Office, in some form, is going to have to bow to appstore pricing norms in order to survive.

And I wasn’t so much saying that the iphone was putting a dent in MS marketshare – its the iPad thats doing that, or iOS really, what I meant was that the iphone alone in Apple generates more revenue than all of Microsoft. Microsoft is like a smaller, old company with a flat shareprice, a boated office suite, 2% of the mobile market, and 0% of the tablet market, a tablet market they expect to start using windows explorer, with the ribbon, with their fingers.
It’s just.. funny the way things have worked out.
