You don’t need a new layer. Make the adjustment layer invisible by making it’s opacity “0%” – then go back to 100% when you need the mask again. use Hold keyframes to go from 100 to 0 and back with no fade.
I don’t know of any decent external tracking tools that are available for this sort of thing, but maybe someone else can sound off.

yopu can also just select all the keyframes, and in the graph editor, use the bounding box to squash or expand them.
Just to make sure it;s super clear (I know it was mentioned) Roving Keyframes is a bad way to do this, because it actually changes the timing of your animation, Timing becomes based on distance between position at various keyframes – not based on the timing you used. Expanding and compressing keyframes the way either I or wuzelwazel suggest will keep the timing proportions correct.

I use Squeeze. I don;t like YouTube becasue no matter what you use, it compresses it into the Flash 7 codec, and therefore compresses your stuff twice. That;s wht stuff looks so bad on You Tube.
If you are only compressing to Flash (which is your best way to reach the most people), consider the cheeper alternative: On2 Flix.

I agree with Filip. You can do it, but it looks much better with stock footage – stuff you can get from Artbeats Film Clutter, for example.
That said, give it a try – create some solids (Red and Yellow) move them to the sides of the shot. Mask them off so their shapes are irregular, and animate them moving up the side of the screen very quickly. Or instead of moving them, have different shapes flash on the side. Make sure to set your solids to the Add transfer mode – makes a huge difference in feeling like it’s part of the clip.
Then start having them flash in the middle of the image as well. This should all happen over the course of maybe 1-2 seconds.

your going to have to either track or do it by hand.
However, that said, instead of applying the effect to a layer, why not create an adjustment layer, and create a small circular matte at the center of the adjustment layer. Then, apply the blur or mosaic effect to the adjustment layer. Then animate the adjustment layer’s position, scale an opacity to control the effect.
If you track the face, you can apply the tracking data to the adjustment layer, so that it follows the head.
This way, you only have to animate and work with one layer.

Now that’s a REAL explanation. Thank you for the article, although it would be great to see if things have changed since windows 2000.
When I was first buying video/computer equipment, the tech people I spoke with basically expalined to me that while USB 2 was faster, the data did not come into video editing programs in a steady stream. Data came in packets, which meant a bumpy road. On the other hand Firewire came in to the app at a steady rate – Or at least that’s the way the software behaved. looking at those charts, it’s clear that it’s actually USB that’s coming in steady, and firewire that is working at a variable rate.
Technical stuff aside (and I’m the first person to enjoy a good tech discussion) this has been my experience: I have drives that are both USB 2 and firewire, and I’ve tested performance, and Firewire wins every time in my video apps. Hands down. USB stuff is stop and go a lot of the time. Not bad for storage, but bad for data access speeds at least on video going into a video app.

This is my understanding:
Firewire delivers a steady stream of data, USB delivers bursts of data. This can cause problems for video file playback – probably less so than if you were using a video editor, which doesn’t RAM preview (i.e., the data MUST come at a constant rate). Still, I’ve found firewire to be a better choice for video work.

Steve Kilisky (Product manager for AE from 3-7) told me it was AE.
Not sure if they did any 3D tracking (like with Bojou or SynthEyes), but it was definately AE motion graphics.

If you aren;t using the professional version of After Efects, it may not be included (I mean AE Pro, not a student license. A student license of AE Pro comes with everything).
The difference is one parameter that was added, however, there may be more stuff under the hood. Older plugins have a way of not working properly in newer version of the program.
FYI – If you buy AE 7 now you will get a free upgrade to AE 8.
