That’s pretty much the way to do it. If you were on a 64-bit OS, you might be able to get more out of your ram, but eventually, large images cause AE to run out of RAM, so splitting them into smaller parts and using a null as a parent for animation is best.
FYI – you are best off creating some overlap with your segments. Otherwise you may get some missing pixels at the cut edge due to anti aliasing.

I guess it depends on the bend. All of the solutions provided here are good ones – however you aren’t clear on what you mean. You could use the puppet tool to bend it as well.
Do you mean in 3D or 2D?

If you do a search for AVI Request Format Error, you will get a TON f hits. This is a common problem and the solution can be found here:

In short – and this is a quote from one of Elvis Deane’s previous posts:
nipped from the pI FAQ:
particleIllusion currently has problems with DV formats. This problem is expected to be fixed in the next update of particleIllusion (3.x). As a work around, you can use VirtualDub to convert your AVI into a codec which particleIllusion can use, or to a sequence of images (PNGs, TGAs, TIFs, etc.).You can also download the Panasonic DV codec, which should allow you to bring DV AVIs into pI, but beware! I’ve found that it makes some video editing programs have trouble importing AVIs encoded with certain other codecs (divx, xvid).

You guys do stellar work. I met Laurent and some of your team last night at After Effects New York, and they showed some clips as well as a few AE projects as well.
Plus, I don’t know of any other animation/advertising group that has their own theme song.

I double check with them tonight – Psyop is speaking at After Effects NY (www.aeny.org), but like everyone said, this is 3D. It may use some 2D particles, but it’s almost all, if not all, 3D

There’s no way to do it with AE alone – although with a little trickery you might be able to pull it off with CC sphere and some flashes of light of motion to obscure the swap.
If you really want to be able to see it from start to end, I think Zaxwerks 3D Warps can do it:

of course, you’re absolutely right.
Still, you have to admit this would make a really interesting experiment. They do similar stuff in 3D where there is audio driven by the animation, and I’d love to see this in AE.

You’re right. No question.
The problem is that when you are working at an animation house that doesn’t have that software, you’re out of luck. Unless they have real scopes – but then good luck figuring out how to use them (not read them – use them).
Most places I worked in the past had real scopes. But a few had nothing.
If you are in control of your environment, then getting the right software for this is something to seriously consider. But if not, then you have to use that Sledge hammer. The question here is – which hammer?

Although, now that I say that, you *might* be able to use expression where the sound is linked to a Null object, and based on how far away and which side of the camera it’s on, it get’s louder and pans.
You might want to post this in the AE expressions forum.
