    Hi there…
Greeting from sunny Spain…New member, just signed in… Thanks to all. This is really a great community… Special thanks to Andrew Kramer and Aharon Rabinowitz for producing very interesting podcasts…
    Q.:
Is there any way to slightly bend solids in AE 7 or to create the illusion of the solids being bent, and of course maintaining the full functionality of the solid. I want to simulate a bent videowall…

Try applying Bezier Warp, or any type of Warp effect. Just type “Warp” in your Effects&Presets pallet and it should pop up.

Let me know if this is what you were looking for.

To give it a true 3D bend you’ll need Zaxwerks 3D Warps.

CC Page Turn is underrated in my own opinion, but you have to keep in mind that any effect that makes a 2D plane look 3D isn’t doing anything beyond making it ‘look 3D.’ Some effects do a better job of this than others. Zaxwerks, for example, allows the 3D approximation to react to the camera and be bisected by other planes… but there are still limitations. Bezier Warp and Page Turn are good options for standard AE effects and Zaxwerks goes beyond the basics.

Basically, you should do your research to see if you need to upgrade your tools before you take the dive and do it. See what kind of results you get from the Distort menu, then decide!

I guess it depends on the bend. All of the solutions provided here are good ones – however you aren’t clear on what you mean. You could use the puppet tool to bend it as well.

Do you mean in 3D or 2D?

I faked a bent videowall a while ago using Displacement mapping, could be what you need.
Was more of a proof of concept, but still cool:
