For the record – any video on a home theater DVD, by nature, is compressed. It has to be. even 3 minutes of uncompressed SD video will not fit on a 4.7 GB DVD. Period.
That means that a VOB file is compressed. That also means there are video keyframes. video Keyframes can cause all sorts of problems when brought into AE, I have found. Old frames seemed to be called up. I have seen this a lot in AE CS3 vs. AE 7, especially with MPEG files.
That said, it doesn’t actually sound like your problem – if it was the same frame being called up at the same time every time, it could be that, but it sounds like when you opened AE the 2nd time the frame being shown was different than the last time.
Still it;s possible you are hitting a video keyframe and AE is just filling it with garbage.
So, how about this – do you have a video editor, or a program that can convert you MPG file to quicktime with animation compression (lossless) or AVI uncompressed. Just do a test and see if this solves your issue. If it does, you’ll have to work around that MPG format.

However, if the camera is moving (i.e, the TV Screen does not stay in the same spot), it’s not quite that simple.
-You will first have to stabilize the footage
– then you’ll probably want to precomp the video – though I don’t think you absolutely have to.
– then you apply the power Pin to the nested comp.

sounds like either a RAM issue, or a problem with the video format and codec your using. Is it compressed video?
What is the specs on the video?

I can’t think of a good reason to do it this way. Is there a reason you are editing everything together first?
It makes more sense to key and composite each shot separately, and then to edit them together after they have been composited.
So, bring the green screen footage into AE – key it out – composite it with the backgrounds and effects you want to use and then bring the clips into your video editor and edit the shots with your regular non-effects shots.

best quality – but you don’t tell us which codec. It makes a HUGE difference!
For example, Best quality on the Sorenson 3 Codec is still lossy. Best quality for Animation Compression is lossless.

you could also simply create red and blue solid layers, create circular masks with feathering over each light, and then set the solid layers’ transfer modes to “add.” Then adjust their opacity based on need. That should do it.

It depends on what you’re doing. AE has an Effect called CC Drizzle (Effect > Simulation > CC Drizzle) which you could put on a solid layer and then make it 3D and then rotate on it’s X-Axis it so it can be composited with the ground.

Just to weigh in here – I have both programs.
Yes, you can do basic compositing with Vegas – but as an effects and compositing package it is EXTREMELY limited when compared to AE. Don’t even compare them. It’s no contest. There is no one who uses both programs regularly would even compare the 2 as serving the same purpose other than to say what Elvis says above:
AE is for compositing and effects but CAN edit (badly)
Vegas is for editing but CAN composite and do effects(very basically)If you were going to compare any adobe product with vegas, it would be premiere, not AE. In the same way you would not compare Microsoft word with Excel, but would instead compare it with WordPerfect, that’s what you should be doing here.
If you want to add effects into your editor, there are plug-ins for that, but as stand alone, video editors are not designed for heavy-duty effects.
So ask yourself – are you going to do more compositing and effects or more editing?
If it’s both you may want to consider getting both? Or you could get both AE and premiere which are more integrated. Although Vegas is a much easier program to use, hands down.
For the record, I edit all of my tutorials in After Effects. Not because it’s the right tool for an editing job, but because I couldn’t do any (or at least most) of my motion Graphics in Vegas (or premiere, for that matter)
Anyway, just my thoughts.

You need a DVD authoring program.
A home theater DVD player (as opposed to a computer DVD player) can’t just look at MPEG2 files and play them. There has to be code on the DVD that tell the player how to access the data and how to play it.
So if you want to make this a playable DVD, look into any of the following programs – iDVD, Sony DVD Architect, Adobe Encore (Comes with Premiere Pro), even something as simple as Adaptech Easy DVD creator.
If you only have uncompressed video, most of these programs will convert your video to MPEG2 (which as you know can take some time) but if you feed it already-converted MPEG2 video many of them will skip that part, saving a lot of time.
But get one of those programs, or see if your computer came with a DVD authoring program.
