if your BG was white, you may have trouble with that. COlor keyers are pretty bad with white and black. Maybe use keylight to key the red, and then use the keyed footage as an inverted matte? (or just use the invert effect to invert the alpha channel.

Since the latest version 3.02 just came out last week, I think it’s safe to say that it will be a while before a major upgrade is released. Alan, the company owner is pretty forthright about when things are coming to a head.
So in short, I think you can go for it without real risk.
Plus upgrade pricing is usually very good.

Well for starters you’re using just about the worst program to compress your video.
Render out of AE uncompressed, and then use an advanced compression program like Sorenson Squeeze or On2 Flix Pro – it will improve your quality greatly.
AE, while able to compress is not designed to compress and has no tools for quality upkeep.
Watch this video for a basic understanding of the problem – it’s just an intro, but it makes the point:

Without advanced compression software, your video will never look as good as it can.
But that said, if you don;t have the option of using/buying squeeze or flix, try increasing your data rate a bit. It can only go so far, but maybe it will help. It will also make your file a lot larger. Squeeze (for example) can keep the file size lower with drastic improvements in quality.

It’s definitely about lighting.
But you might pull it off without a flashlight. You can create a feathered circle the same color, and use the Add mode to brighten and colorize those areas. It may work.

YEah – thickness is an issue. The cow logo was just too dense to thicken the lines – I had too much overlap. It;s a good point, so for the tutorial I’ll try using something less dense.
Also, I’ve since added in some motion blur to it, which gives if more depth, in essence – it’s basically lines. A lot of it will be positioning.
there are many tools that will allow you to achieve this:
VEctor Paint
Paint tools
Stroke
Trapcode 3D stroke
Trapcode particularTruth be told there a lot of ways this can be done. If Vector pain were easy to control – i.e., you could use whatever path shape you want – it would be the ideal for this, because it allows you to vary the stroke width. Especially if you’re using a wacom tablet. Plus wiggling it is much simpler.
But because you have to draw the shape manually, vector paint is very limited for this and other effects – especially for those like me who can’t draw with precision…
I think that if you used camera matching software and used 3D stroke or particular for the lines,you might be able to create something really cool with camera rotation.
Ultimately, when making this stuff for tutorials, I always work without plug-ins so anyone can do it. The plug-in users out there can take what I’ve created, and adapt it to their toolset.

you’ll want to use the linear expression to take the large range of values from the audio keyframes layer, to convert it to a much smaller range.

well, why don’t you download a trial version of Sorenson Squeeze to see the difference. It won’t cost you anything.
One of the big things that make for good encoding is multi-pass compression – at least one analysis pass before encoding. Also, a mix of automatic keyframes with interval based keyframes is crucial in the upkeep of video quality. If your software can’t do both of these, then you are already losing the compression game.

When you say universally playable – do you mean playable by the largest possible audience?
If so, go with Flash, as it exists on a bout 98% of computers.
I would suggest taking the video into your video editor and re-exporting at 640×480 or some other square pixel based resolution (such as 320×240). the current resolution is designed for broadcast – over the web (as on your PC right now) it will appear stretched. Your compression program can change the aspect ratio, but it won’t look as good as if you did it in your video editor.
As far as settings go, your server speed is not really the main issue – you can have a great speed, but if my connection is slow, it will DL slow. The goal is to keep the file size as small as possible while keeping the quality up. Period.
Take a look at the different presets and give a few of them a go. Compression is a lot of give and take, and once you understand what the different compression properties do, you’ll have a much better ability to make the right decisions.
