I get that a lot with quicktime with sorenson compression. You can try using the same effect (Levels) and adjust the levels on the red channel to desaturate it.

Also, you can try using the Color Balance Effect to lower the red on 3 seperate levels.

Finally, it bares mentioning that if you atre going to DVD, the codecs used to go to DVD look really cruddy on a computer monitor, but a lot better on a TV screen.

If you are going to DVD, why not try playing this on a DVD player and seeing if it looks better.

That is being caused by your info palette color settings. Go to the info palette, and click on the little black arrow (Points to the right)- all the way to the upper right corner.

You’ll get a pulldown with color display options.

Change the color setting from “Percent” to “Auto Color Display” – Now your colors will all be represented as units of RGB vs % of RGB.

I switched back and forth between the 2 and it looks like

    16 = 6.2744%
    235 = 92.157%

Here’s a trick I’ve used successfully in controling safe colors, which may help here…

For every piece of footage you bring in apply the Levels effect and set the following:

    In Black: 16
    In White: 235

On another adjustment layer on top of your final comp use the same effect with the following settings:

    Out Black: 16
    Out White: 235

Now I suspect that you could just make one final layer with 1 levels effect with all 4 settings, but I am not sure about the order of theeffect properties, so I don’t know if it’s a good idea.

The point of using this is to get rid of hot colors – you will see a difference on the computer screen- things get a bit duller, but you will barely see a difference on the TV, and the untrained eye will not notice a thing.

Plus in your case, where the algorythm is dealing with too many hot colors, this may correct for your problem.

I’m really not clear on what you are attempting to do here, but I don’t believe you can effect the alpha channel that way, though I’m not sure. I’ve never seen that done in AE before. Maybe in photoshop?

If you are trying to fill in some of the transparent areas in your alpha channels, maybe try applying the effect called Effect > Adjust > Levels, and set it to adjust the alpha channel (By defualt it is set to RGB). then try moving the arrow sliders (Especially the Gamma Correction – the gray one) closer to the white area.

Yoiu can use this effects to tell the grayer areas of your alpha channel to become darker or lighter (more transparet or opaque).

Unfortunately, pIllusion’s blockers can’t be feathered. I usually render out my particles, and then bring the footage into After Effetcs, and create a feathered mask. This makes the edges soft.

  • It sounds like one of the frames of your background source footage is corrupt.

does it play on it’s own outside of AE?

Did you make it yourself? Can you re-make it?

If it’s an image sequence, can you replace that bad frame?

Man I hate that effect. It doesn;t work on frames, it works on seconds.

If you are trying to get that layer to just wink in and out of existance quickly, what I’d suggest is seting 3 opacity keyframes and making an expression that loops them.

These should be hold keyframes by the way:

    Time Opacity

    00 100%
    02 0%
    04 100%

The expression in the opacity property should be:

    loopOut(type = “cycle”)

This will loop the opacity so that it blinks every 2 frames. Move them closer together and it will be every other frame.

If, on the other hand, you are trying to flash the layer as a color, I’d suugest the same thing for keyframes only applied to the effect called Image control > Tint

Set both Tint Colors to the color you want and then set the same keyframes and expression for the amount to tint.

  • Try particleIllusion – it excels at making fire, smoke, water, and sparkel effects.

I used pIllusion recently to make a looping BG of fire for a DVD menu. Looked awesome.

We have a forum for pIllusion here at the cow, btw.

There are certain codecs that only look good in certain venues – meaning that until you are going to that venue, work with animation compression (Which is virtually lossless) or any other lossless compression.

An example of this is MPEG-2 – when I output MPEG-2 from AE, it looks terrible on my computer screen, but good on my DVD player.
