  • A layer that uses a track matte (The sith dude, for example) goes below the matte layer (interference).

Once below the track matte layer, you turn on the matte by telling the sith dude’s layer to use the above layer as a matte. Use the pull down to use either a luma matte (A matte based on levels of light – if you have a black and white image) and an Alpha Matte (A matte based on alpha channel). It all depends on what the layer you are using as a matte.

Anyway, the point is, if there were only 2 layers in the entire project, and you set it up so the order is:

    1) matte
    2) Footage to be matted

    – your matte layer will not have a pull down for track matte options. That’s because a track matte is just a regular layer. What makes it a track matte is your telling another layer to use it as one.

    Make sense?

Also, it’s worth mentioning, that you can use only one layer at a time as a track matte for another layer. That doesn’t mean there can only be one track matte per project. What I mean is if you stack several matte layers on top of eachother and at the bottom have the layer to be matted, then you can only use the layer immedietly above it.

So what if you want to have multiple layers working together to create a complex animated matte – the answer is take all of those layers (except the footage to be matted) and place them in another composition (this is called Called “precomping” or “precomposing”), and then nest that comp in the current comp, right above your layer to be matted).

    Hope this helps.

This is a tutorial Elvis did on disintigrating a logo, but it uses the same concept as the disintigrating a person (think of it as a logo that looks more like a person than a logo….):

Post the Q in the pIllusion forum. While I’ve never tried it, I know others have, so give it a shot.

Hate to break it to you, they went lo tech for that, if I’m not mistaken.

The filmed a water tank and blasted air (or water?) into it and filmed it from several directions. In fact, if you watch the series or movie, you’ll see that they only show it head on or from the side – otherwise it would get distorted if shot at a 3/4 angle.

You can probably recreate something similar with particle Illusion at https://www.wondertouch.com. We have a forum for that program here as well.

  • Fir my site, I use sorenson Squeeze to create QT MOV’s. Quicktime, is used by virtually everyone in the graphics/animation industry.

Squeeze can also convert video to some tight Flash movies as well.

I didn’t even realize we had a compression tequniques forum. I have to go check that out…

right now it has to be an image sequence. But if you really need to have a MOV with alpha, you could always import the Tiff, TGA, or PNG sequence into a program like After Effects or a NLE like Vegas, and then output the quicktime with alpha (Straight, not premultiplied).

That’s the solution I use. But usually I just use an image sequence – most programs don;t see it any differently than an MOV or AVI.

    I didn’t know that. Cool.

You can also just click the black > Arrow on the upper right corner of the info pallate which gives you a pulldown with all of the different options.

June 19, 2005 at 2:15 am in reply to: echo effect

What you’d need to do is set the number of echos to 0 until you wanted the trail to start. Then set it to a high number.

It’s important to set the time to a low negative (-) value so that the echos will be close together creating a trail.

I don;t know fi this is the bexst way to do it, but it’s all I can think of offhand.

If you did it with a 3D program, you could make the TV Screen a “Cloth” either in maya or Max or whatever 3D program you use, and then model a 3D hand and have it push up agains the cloth and deform it.

I don;t think you can pull this off in just AE.
