June 18, 2005 at 11:56 pmi know from watching the “making of” on the dvd, that that effect was effect by rear-projecting onto a sheet of latex that doubled as the screen. Then someone just stuck their hand through the hollow body of the tv and pushed out on the latex. this probably doesn’t help you in terms of how to accomplish this digitally, but an interesting fact nonetheless.
good luck,ignacio

June 19, 2005 at 1:56 amIf you did it with a 3D program, you could make the TV Screen a “Cloth” either in maya or Max or whatever 3D program you use, and then model a 3D hand and have it push up agains the cloth and deform it.
I don;t think you can pull this off in just AE.

June 19, 2005 at 5:40 amMe thinks, Digital Anarchy’s 3D layer should do it with the proper Grayscale displacement map.

June 20, 2005 at 2:12 pmCould you use 3d layer to reproduce the Stargate gate effects, where a cg water splash opens the wormhole? Obviously the stargate crew used a high-end program, but i’d be curious to know if it could be reproduced

June 20, 2005 at 2:40 pmHate to break it to you, they went lo tech for that, if I’m not mistaken.
The filmed a water tank and blasted air (or water?) into it and filmed it from several directions. In fact, if you watch the series or movie, you’ll see that they only show it head on or from the side – otherwise it would get distorted if shot at a 3/4 angle.
You can probably recreate something similar with particle Illusion at https://www.wondertouch.com. We have a forum for that program here as well.

June 21, 2005 at 8:09 amLo-tech? Wow, looks good.
Oh well, i’ve got Particle Illusion but must admit i’ve not been able to reproduce it. I’m not making a film or anything, but shows like Stargate are always giving me ideas to see if i can reproduce.
Thanks Aharon
