You could also try a 3rd party Program called particleIllusion (which is becoming a plug-in for AE in the near future). The prgram works well with AE, and it’s really fast.

Elvis deane wrote a tutorial on doing this very effect:

I actually just like to use the Effect called Levels to create the flash. I play with the input white values, and maybe add a glow and blur – all keyframed so that one moment things look normal, and say, 4 frames later it’s all broght up so it looks like a flash.

You should put the effects in the following order:

Blur
Glow
Levels

From the AE help files:

If you want to assign a parent layer, but do not want that layer to be a visible element in your project, use a null object. A null object is an invisible layer that has all the properties of a visible layer so it can be a parent to any layer in the composition. (See Understanding parent layers.) Adjust and animate a null object as you would any other layer. (See Setting and animating a layer property in the Timeline window.)

A composition can contain any number of null objects. A null object is visible only in the Composition and Layer windows and appears in the Composition window as a rectangular outline with layer handles. Effects are not visible on null objects.

To create a null object:

Select the Timeline or Composition window and choose Layer > New > Null Object.

Note: The anchor point of a new null object layer appears in the upper left corner of the layer, and the layer is anchored in the center of the composition at its anchor point. Change the anchor point as you would for any other layer. (See Setting and animating an anchor point).

scale it up. If you motion tracked with scaling, then use a null object as a parent to scale up your picture.

BTW – I suggest you mask it in AE, not PS. It’s saves a lot of time.

Not having seen your video, this may be wholly inappropriate for your shot…

You might try playing with the effect called Fractal Noise, and animating it.

I’ve found that making several layers with fractal noise and using the “strings” setting of that effect, along with bringing up the contrast (also a property of the effect). I use the “Add” transfer mode for all layers, give them all a very low opacity, and put those layers on top of my static color background. It almost looks like Plasma, and if it’s subtle enough (i.e., very transparent) you almost don’t see it, but feel like things are more active.

Don’t forget to change the random seed values so that each layer looks different.

I have no idea what is causing that.

Here are my makeshift solutions – If they need the audio file for a NLE like final cut, then you can just render out your audio as an AVI with no video. The NLE should have no problem.

If this works, and your sound quality is where it should be, but you absolutely need it as a WAV file, maybe try either re-exporting that new audio file from AE as a WAV, or use a program that can extract audio from an AVI – most audio programs can do this, and Quicktime Pro should be able to convert it for you.

I’m not saying these solutions are ideal, but they’re all I can think of, not being there with you to see the file.

I don’t recognize that Aspect Ratio. Either FCP is set incorrectly, or more likely, FCP is just not encoding the PAR info properly for some reason. Just tell AE the proper PAR (in the interperate footage dialog), and if it seems to fit properly after that, it’s probably fine.

A program I use called particleIllusion doesn’t encode the PAR info proerly for PNG’s so I’ve seen this problem before.

If you plan on dropping the footage onto the Create New Comp Icon to create a comp the same size and length as your footage, Make sure that you interperate the footage properly before doing that. Otherwise the comp will have the same wierd aspect ratio.
