    Ben-

You’re absolutey right and I’m wrong. I’d swear I tried this in the past with no success, but either it’s changed since it was first created, or I just didn;t do it right the first time.

you learn something new everyday. If you didn’t, it’s a waste.

    Thanks.

For all intents and purposes, Shatter is dynamic – once the force hits, it is no longer under the influence of keyframes (excluding the physics, I think, which can then effect the environment, but not the actual shards) – and therefore you can’t time remap it without rendering it first. The above method (with time remapping) will not work unless you render it first.

If you’re going to do it that way, set your comp settings to 99 FPS (The highest frame rate you can have in AE*. Render it, import it, Then time remap.

    * If you have footage at higher than 99 FPS, and you drop that footage on the create comp icon, the comp will be created at the same frame rate as the footage.

There are particle programs that can use an alpha map as the source of the particles. ParticleIllusion can do this, and if you have an animated shape of the bird, you could get it to do that.

Also, not sure if particular can do this – but it’s a plug-in for AE, and it might be able to do that too.

Raise (or lower?) the viscosity setting. That gives you a big hit, but then friction builds up quickly and the shards slow down fast.

What I’ve done in the past was to create a lot of confined steam at the impact point (A line emitter with low velocity). You might try playin with some of the rain drop emitters by making the area of emission small, and the drops larger with a lower number of drops. Though , the steam has been enough for my needs.

  • you *might* want to try doing a repair install of AE off the AE CD. Something may have been damaged. But it may be that driver. Have you checked to see if there is a new driver available?

Can you describe this effect in better detail. It’s a little unclear what you’re trying to do.

    Thanks.

  • have you tried it with other audio files, with different settings? I’ve had trouble with 48K audio in the past.

If you can play other audio in there it’s either an udio codec issue – i.e., AE can;t read it properly, or the fact that it’s at 48K (Whcih it really shouldn’t have trouble with but might).

If that is the problem, can you export your audio in a different format?

particleIllusion is great for this thing, but if you want to save some money, you can get something like disney stuff using the effect called CC Particle Systems 2, and then set the particle Type to Star.
