I’m not sure I understand the question completely, but given some of the facts you laid down in there…
I know that compressed files (both going into and out of AE) slow it down in rendering. Also the high-res nature of your comp is absolutely going to make it render slower. That comp size is probably a killer.
Just my thoughts – not sure if I fully understood.

Try Trashing your preferences file. On my PC they are located here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Aharon Z Rabinowitz\Application Data\Adobe\After Effects\Prefs
The file is called “Adobe After Effects 6.5 Prefs.txt”
Sometimes the file gets corrupt, and when AE tries starting up, it crashes. Don’t worry, when AE restarts (Assuming it can) it will create a new Prefs file.

Wondertouch also offers emitters for Motion.
Also, AE and pIllusion work very well together, easily exchanging positition data.

October 17, 2005 at 2:53 am in reply to: Particle Illusion 3 and Adobe After Effects Luminescent Premul?Luminescent premultiply should only be used when you are using a mix of both intense and non-intense particles, or if you are using particles with a soft edge that is picking up color fringing. You would only use Luminscent premultiply when dealing with both intense and non intense particles – not for non-intense soft edged particles. Take a look at this tutorial:
https://www.wondertouch.com/tutorials/aharon/CNIA/cnia.html
Make sure to use both the proper export settings (From PI) and import settings (Into AE) for your situation. If you do either wrong, or mismatch them, you get nothing usable.
Also VERY important – For Luminescent premultiply to work, There must be a layer behind your particles that fills up the entire alpha channel (LIke a solid or a picture). If there is nothing behind the particles, you will not see any of your intense particles outside the area occupied by your non-intense particles.
FYI – I cover this subject in depth in my Creative Cow Master Series DVD: ParticleIllusion Fusion Volume 1.
Hope the above helps you.

October 10, 2005 at 11:32 pm in reply to: how much would the RAM increase AE’s performance? The Ram will give you someplace to cache your preview images, which means longer previews and a better workflow with 2 GB of RAM (Compared to 1GB or less), but faster processors are what speeds things up.

I wenbt with Boxx Technologies and have been extremely satisified with them. We teach on Boxx computers at Pratt, used them at Nickelodeon Digital when I was there, and I use one as my primary computer now that I work mostly from home.
You can definately get a powerful machine for under 5K – probably closer to 3K for you rneeds, not including cost of monitors.

October 10, 2005 at 10:46 pm in reply to: The best graphicboard for particle illusionpersonally I’ve had a lot of luck with nVidea Cards. I’ve heard ALan say that cards geared more towards gaming instead of 3D animation and design are better suited to pIllusion. Again, nVideo cards have worked for well for me, wether for gaming or 3D design.
The more on board RAM you have on your Open GL card, the better/faster pIllusion will run.

is that what you did in yours for blur?
FYI – CC Motion Blur comes with After Effecs 6.5. Its one of the Cycore effects found as a seperate installer on any non-educational copy of the AE disc.

Now that we’re playing with time… For extra kick add the CC force Motion Blur Effect – it will give you a motion blur on the shatter – generally a good tool for adding motion blour when you are playing with time. Works best on a nested comp – sometimes doesn’t work directly on a layer with an effect.
