One thing about particleIllusion is that the tools in there are exteremely visual – not very technical-seeming at all. But it’s pretty powerful. It was one of the first 2 programs i learned to use as an animator (before it was even called particleIllusion) and I still use it in my high-profile work today.

ANd you can fake 3D in many situations.

But again, if you must have everything inside AE, then Particular is the way to go.

Miguel – you can’t extend the layer until AFTER you time remap. Once remapping is applied, then you can extend it, but only to the duration of the comp. So if your comp is 10 seconds, you won’t be able to make you’re clip any longer than 10 seconds.

If you don’t want to move outside AE for your particles, and you want 3D particles, then go with Particular. There are definately advantages with staying in AE.

However, If you want an extremely fast, flexible and easy to use 2D-only particle system that comes with over 1300 FX out of the box, then go with particleIllusion. pIllusion can exchange position data with AE, by the way, so you can easily match things up.

Both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Add to Render Queue is the same thing as Make movie – near as I can tell. In the past there may have been a different functionality, but i don’t see that now.

The work flow is like this:

Work in AE > Make Movie > Render

After you hit Make movie and set everything up then you render.

It is not the same thing, but eventually, yes, Make movie does lead you into rendering.

In fat, you can’t Render, unless you first “Make Movie” (although you can Export video which is a can of worms I want to avoid for this explanation…)

But again, adjusting your car seat and mirror (make Movie) are not the same thing as driving (Render) to your destination (Final Video). They are part of the process of getting prepaired for the drive.

It’s the difference between sitting down in your car and adjusting the seat and mirror, and actually driving.

Make movie is adjusting your car seat and mirror.

Rendering is driving.

“Make movie” sets up a composition for Render. It opens the render queue and gives you the ability to change the setting for final output. Once set up, you hit the render button.

Rendering is the process of taking your comp and outputting it as a video file (or image sequence or audio file or whatever).
