I don’t know if it’s possible with Xpresso, but it’s definitely doable with the Constraint Tag in Parent mode:

Caustics are part of the Advanced Render module. Sounds like you either don’t have it or it isn’t installed correctly.

  • There is no global environment map. What you could do is map your texture to a sky object and then give the sky object a compositing tag with “seen by camera” unchecked. Then use reflectance rather than environment in your materials.

  • Poser is the best one for figure creation. It comes with quite a few models that can be modified in many ways, and you can buy additional characters, clothes, props, etc. for it.

Motion Builder is strictly an animation package, and it’s better at that than Poser.

Poser is probably the more intuitive program, although I wouldn’t say that either is particularly intuitive to be honest. One thing Poser has going for it is a large user base, so it should be easier to get tutorials and help.

I’m not familiar with Figure Art — sorry.

  • Environment maps are assigned through materials. You have to go to the material’s Basic tab and check the Environment box. Then go to the Environment tab and assign your map.

You’ll get the best results with an HDRI, but any bitmap will work.

  • Motion Builder is probably the closest thing to what you’re looking for but it’s quite expensive. Poser might get you part way there as well. But as far as I know there is nothing that’s exactly like what you want (or near as simple).

    Here’s a quick shot at: https://www.3danvil.com/tutorials/jello.c4d

It’s done in r11 so I’m not sure how it will look if you’re using an earlier version. Should give you the basic idea anyway.

A good place to start is with the built-in water shader in the bump channel. It provides for animation, wave period, etc. Then add a little reflection, color, transparency, etc. to taste.

Unfortunately there’s no easy way to change out objects unless you’ve set the scene up with instances or xrefs from the beginning. The Functions>Transfer command should make it a little less painful. :/

Materials, otoh, are pretty easy. Just multiselect all the texture tags that have the matieral you want changed and then drag the new material from the material manager into the texture tag’s “Material” box.

You would load the video into a material and place the material on your object.
