I have been experimenting now with reflective surfaces but one thing I can not get my head round is reflections from an environment map I want to render a logo out with a metallic look to it but only render the logo with nothing else around it I have tried an environment with a texture but I can not seem get my head around it could someone point me in the right direction any help would be much appreciated I have attached a file for the look I am after I would like to know how environment maps work is it menu>objects>scene>environment then applying an image to it ??

    many thanks G

Environment maps are assigned through materials. You have to go to the material’s Basic tab and check the Environment box. Then go to the Environment tab and assign your map.

You’ll get the best results with an HDRI, but any bitmap will work.

    Thank you very much

I did find that after posting this although I did wonder if there is a map that is applied to the whole scene rather than individual objects/materials so that different materials reflect the same map?

There is no global environment map. What you could do is map your texture to a sky object and then give the sky object a compositing tag with “seen by camera” unchecked. Then use reflectance rather than environment in your materials.
