Unfortunately I don’t have experience with Maya, but I provide Maya users with Cinema objs and fbx files and they haven’t had any problems with them. Is it possible that you may have to import to the objects into Maya rather than opening them directly? In other words you may need to use File>Import rather than File>Open.

Not sure why that would be, but if you can’t get it to work I’d try exporting in Collada or FBX format.

    Hi Jim,

I’m on Windows. The C4DImporter plugin I have is dated 5-11-15, so newer than the one you’re talking about. This is the plugin that allows AE to open the .aec files.

The C4DFormat plugin allows you to go the other way: from AE to Cinema.

You may have multiple versions installed which could be the problem. I’d delete the ones you have installed now and replace them with the versions in the Exchange Plugins folder that was installed with R17.

  • Welcome to the dark world. 😉

I would say that the primary reason for rendering to individual frames is that you don’t risk losing your entire render in the event that you experience a crash or some other misfortune. This can be a BIG problem if you’re working on a tight deadline and, e.g., rendering out your animation over night. You could come back in the morning and find that you’re completely screwed.

Another reason is that there’s generally less overhead for compositing and 3D programs reading image sequences as opposed to compiled movie files. In order to use .mov files, your compositor/editor/3D program has to first decompress the entire animation. The difference becomes particularly stark if you ever use animated textures or backgrounds in Cinema, where movie files can really bog down the program.

It’s working here for me with R17 and AE CS6. I’m using the plugin that’s installed in R17’s Maxon>Exchange Plugins folder.

Do you have the “Include 3D data” box checked in the Render>Save>Compositing Project File settings?

There is a preset that does exactly this which you’ll find in the content browser. Search for “TP Follow Spline,” or you’ll find it under the TP>Setups>Interaction section. It uses some scripting but you may be able to decipher it if you want to learn how it was built.

I did a quick video tutorial on the time track. Hopefully this will help: https://youtu.be/q6AuonzrDJ4

You can either do this with Xpresso or by using a Character>Constraint tag on the object you want constrained.
