    Hi Alison,

you’d be surprised how many post on here looking for exactly that – people to do the work for them!. I apologise if my comment came across harsher than it was intended.

you might want to try looking at these sites – you might find something to help…

the after effects & Trapcode forums here on the Cow.

https://www.trapcode-people.net/index.php – a user forum thats a bit awkward to navigate round

http://www.videocopilot.net – andrew kramer does brilliant tutorials for After Effects (some of which use Particular)

Also – it would be worth looking for the podcast tutorials by Aharon Rabinowitz on the Cow – his After Effects lesson are invaluable

https://www.trapcode.com/download.html – you can download tutorials by Peder Norby (the guy who IS trapcode.

Trapcode Particular is pretty easy to use but can be devilishly complex once you start exploring the possibilities. Have fun….

Trapcode Particular (after effects plug-in) is a great particle generator – as well as it having some basic firework presets, there are plenty of tutorials on the web that should be able to give you enough info to create something yourself (especially as you are design student…its your job to learn, not to get other to do it for you!!)

December 13, 2007 at 2:11 pm in reply to: Batch Capture Problem

i’ve just had the same thing happen to me…but with an extra bit of weirdness thrown in !

Capturing digibeta to 10 bit uncompressed, i had to switch to ltc because whoever made the tape had managed to screw up the vitc. I logged two 30 second clips and hit batch. It started at the correct point but carried on playing through both clips to the end of the timecode and stopped. After hitting the cancel button, it tells me that one clip was captured and not both. Checking the clip – it is just showing the correct media. So why is it playing through the entire reel for a single shot, then doing the same for the next shot?

Indcidentally, i also had to load in stuff an hour earlier from an fcp project sent by a colleague overseas (also using the latest FCP version) and that batch capture worked perfectly!

December 12, 2007 at 8:56 am in reply to: Kernel Panics during backup

well the way the software engineer described how kernels work and how the Netvault software works i am convinced he does know about kernels and kernel panics!

As for tape v Disk? well i want something that is robust, has a long shelf life and can store vast quantities of data. I need to be able to store that data offsite and be easily transported. I have not read anything yet that has proved hard disks to have as long a shelf life as tape, and hdd’s take up more physical space than a tape with the equivalent capacity.

I have reloaded the software, re installed the hardware, replaced cables and atto scsi card. Repaired permissions, ran Apple Hardware Test, ran Techtool Deluxe. Later today i will try swap the scsi and software to my second mac, although that is not a really practical solution because all my raid data will need to be pulled across the network as opposed to direct via fibre channel.

    Any other suggestions…anyone?

    Thanks Matte,

    1&2 – definitely not!
3 – so long since i used Avid i cannot remember what it did.

I am convincd that up until i had to trash the preferences, i had it working how i wanted. Which is to start up from Dock, and not to open anything but simply to wait until i went to the file menu and either opened a project or created a new one. Its entirely possible that i am just imagining the whole thing!

Apple were also using those same figures in London earlier this year. And don’t forget that is just registered users – there are plenty of illegal copies doing the rounds as well.

Regardless of the NLE, Macs have been used in Post for over a decade both for FCP and Avid. early versions of Media 100 also ran on the Mac.

I know for a fact that all lot of facilities in UK use Mac/FCP. I use it for all my commercials (over 300 this year).

The Mac is the backbone of studios cutting stopframe animation shows Bob the Builder & Pingu ( i know – i worked on them).

I also use a separate mac for doing all my audio production on Protools.

On that page there is the option to stop opening the last project (which i knew about). There appears to be nothing that stops the empty project from opening up….and its that that i am really bugged about!

hmmm- perhaps i gave less info than i should.

I have been all the way through all the preference options, and there is nothing (at least to my eyes) which offers the option of not opening up an untitled empty project when first starting FCP. I’m not so dim as to just ask without first checking myself.

So if you do know the answer Steve, please let me know – cos i’ve already looked (several times).
