it all depends on what you already have connected to your mac (ie-what video card, what tape decks, etc) and what you actually want to use the mixing desk for.
I don’t ever remember seeing a mixing desk actually used for mixing on a non linear system – thats either done in the box or sent over to Protools (or some other audio package.
Usually its to provide flexible audio monitoring, and occasionally to allow levels to be set with a fader when digitizing off or laying back to tape. However, that is also dependant on the signal you are sending or receiving….if analogue, then your desk is fine, whereas if its a digital signal such as from a digibeta then you would be better leaving the audio signal embedded within the sdi video and letting a decent video card (such as the Kona’s) handle the audio.
This is what i do – the kona 3 handles all the audio from digibeta, and all the monitoring is done by taking an analogue feed from the stereo rca plugs on the kona breakout box into the Mackie Big Knob (essentially its a small mixer without all the faders). As the mackie has several inputs I can also feed my Protools rig into it and monitor through the same loudspeakers.
Tell us what you have and what you want to achieve and you’ll probably get some useful suggestions.

already tried that method Jeremy, but this time the motion/action is too close to the edge to make it a viable alternative.
I solved the problem with a combination of AE’s warp mesh and a vignette to draw attention away from the edges.

thanks Andy, i’ll check em out right away.
Just been trying the Warp Mesh in AE, and that seems to be quite a flexible option for doing this kind of effect as well.

January 3, 2008 at 12:42 am in reply to: “Out of Memory” on Renders/Loosing Renders on Restarti’ve also had the “out of memory” error many times, on 20 sec commercials with no stills, and at 10bit uncompressed pal resolution. It always happened when i was in the middle of a render, and once it struck, it corrupted the sequence and prevents me from ever opening that sequence again. My only option was to retrieve a previous version from the autosave vault.
I’ve never had a good explanation of why it happens, and it has happened on all versions from 5.14 up through 6.
good luck

thanks for the replies….
currently, i do tend to use the mac file structure. I was never a fan of avid and was glad to move away from it when i got the chance.
All my project files are stored on the system drive, everything else goes on the raid. I too work in sd pal, although i am about to start using HD source files as these do allow me greater latitude to resize and recompose shots (i tried it on the last ad and its a great option to have!).
My discomfort comes from having everything go into one Capture Scratch / Render Files / etc.
I want to move to a more project-centric (that sound made up – must be americaneze!!) workflow.Basically, i want to make it easier to archive an entire project (going onto both lto-3 tape and a separate harddrive) before removing from the Raid.
It sounds like my original idea might be workable – separate file structure for each project – so i’ll give it a try soon.
muchas grassy ass for the thoughts chaps, and happy new year to you all.

funny thing Dave, i thought most Americans spoke English, they just spelt it wrongly!!
i’ll look into shanes dvd. i do think i have spotted a flaw in my reasoning though – the capture scratch et al are not project specific so to go mucking about with them could cause a few crazy mishaps!

what neil means is to check that the types of rendering you want to happen when you press apple-r have a check mark next to them. If they don’t then select it and the mark will appear (you may need to check it several times to get all the check marks you need)

I think i may have cured it….
Install the newest Aja Kona 3 driver (v5) , then repaired permissions, then used FCPRestore6. And hey presto, the previous batch that was so screwy just works correctly.

at least i’m not the only one who’s seeing it !
The cancel option relinks some of the files, but i have just discovered another odd aspect to this problem. I Highlighted an entire project i got from a colleague overseas, hit batch capture etc etc. I managed to link 17 of the 61 clips on the tape. But i noticed that the amount of disc space used was rather excessive, so a hunt through the capture scratch show that regardless of the clip duration (ranges from 1 sec to 7 secs at 10 bit uncompressed sd pal every clip was showing as being 1.9gb in size!!
Something is definitely wrong here, and i know its not any of my settings that have changed!

simply highlight the offline clips in your FCP Browser and select Batch Capture from the drop down menus. Then choose your options and away you go..
