Hi Dan,
they are not offset in z space, but that is the kind of effect i need, only in 2d space.
My initial thought was that i would need to set upper and lower limits for each layer, so that they both started and finished at the same point on the screen when translating in Y. Then i would need the overall distance from these two points converted into a percentage. Then by parenting both layers to a slider control i could enter a single number and both layers would translate by that percentage of the overall possible distance..
The effect being that at the centre point of the screen, both large and small text would converge, and by using masking, i could reveal the larger text as if it were being viewed through a magnifier.I tried the magnify effect, but it was not right for this task.

answered my problem…it seems the indicator only appears if the filter is active. There are plenty of filters that have been applied to this timeline, but few are active, so only a few appear.
hope that helps anyone else puzzling over this.

i’m using that setting but it seems to be inaccurate.
According to the manual, i should see a green line under the clips that have filters applied. There are a few clips showing this, but there are also a whole heap with filters that are not appearing.
these kind of inconsistencies really bug me!!

well even if it is only 1%, then with a touted user base of approx 1 million registered users, thats still an awful lot of people who use Livetype.
I never use Motion, i tried and found it to slow and buggy. All my fx work is done with AE or Shake. I have a library of legals and riders that get used on almost every commercial i make, and they are all made using Livetype. I rarely use the animation features, but as an easily adjustable text generator, it does a fine job.
I don’t want Apple to waste time and resources improving it, but i would hope they continue to supply it so those who do use it still have the option.

no livetype anymore?
damn!
It may be simple but its perfect for adding those annoying little legal riders at the bottom of commercials. I use it a lot…just hope the upgrade doesn’t remove my older copy.Doubt thats enough to get me bugged, sounds like a pretty good upgrade to me. Can’t really see what all the bitchings about. I’m a pro editor, and FCP works fine for me. You just gotta know how your toolset works!

whilst i would reccommend Color for anything colour….there is another method that can give quick results.
Place a Matte Colour onto a layer above your video on the timeline, set it to whatever colour you want, then use the composite blending modes to affect the video. You will get varying degrees of success, but it might be a quick way to alter the look.
You can also reduce the effect the blend has by reducing the opacity of the colour layer.

when you say it recorded to tape in 4:3, you’re probably not seeing true 4:3 but a distorted aspect ratio 16:9.
Formats like DigiBeta record 16:9 anamorphic this way, so that all the bandwidth on the tape is used to store data, rather than wasting digits by filling them with black bars at the top and bottom of the image. this extra data helps to improve the overall picture quality. Offhand i can’t remember the technical explanation but its something to do with squeezing the image in at the sides by changing the pixel dimensions from horizontal to vertical.
This is the reason the format is called 16:9 Full Height Anamorphic (FHA). Its during playback or transmission that the image is restored to its correct aspect ratio either by the broadcaster, the monitor, the edit software, etc.
some questions that might help point you in the right direction…
Have you checked your import settings to ensure you are capturing the correct aspect ratio video?
Is the camera outputting at the correct format? I seem to remember on my Sony camera there are options for outputting different formats.
Once the video is on the timeline, double click the footage and check the Viewer windows Motion Tab, the Distort setting may be incorrectly set.
what format does your camera record? dv, hdv, digibeta, something else?
are you editing and playing out the same format as you recorded in, or are there some format conversions going on?adam
