i think this needs a lot more head scratching, because i cannot get anything other than the camera to respond to the time track, even though i have it assigned to each parameter.

I’m going to have to start over i think.

your advice has been very helpful – thanks

    Hi Adam,

weird – tried this with the same file but on my Tower instead of the laptop, and it seems to be working!

What i can’t figure out though, is this – I want to slowmo the entire scene for a section in the middle, not just the align to path.

I actually have several different align to paths (flying object / camera / camera target) – so rather than trying to adjust each one, i want to apply the time effect to everything…

in the meantime – thanks for the advice…i’m a lot closer than i was before it!

thanks Adam, i can see what you’re suggesting and it makes sense but i must be doing something wrong because i cannot get the process to work.

    Here’s what i’m doing….

open Timeline – its empty, so I dragged the align to spline tag into Timeline. This seems to automatically add a Time track. Although the attributes mgr shows the time track link box, its greyed out so i cannot drag the time track into it.

Adding a special track/time track just ads another time track, but again i cannot drag it into the attributes mgr.

Any idea what i might be doing wrong?

my first job in the industry sounds a lot like yours. I taught myself to edit, and used the opportunity of working with experienced people to absorb as much wisdom as i could.

I don’t have a degree but did have a good quantity of high school exams. I was told by my boss during a conversation months after i had started, that had he known how many qualifications i had he would never have even interviewed me, as he had much less! The guy was not the most forward thinking.

For me, a degree would be an interesting way to expand your overall knowledge, but its not a necessity for furthering an editing career. Experience, understanding, and a willingness to try new things would all stand ahead of a degree for me.

one thing i have found really useful for learning styles of editing is to watch “foreign language” films.
There are some fantastic contemporary films from France and Italy which tell really great stories with a visual flair that can be refreshingly different from Hollywood.

Its not as if there is not an option for people right now.

As has been said – Smoke for Mac is on the market. If the marketing hype is to be believed, then it will do pretty much everything that is being requested.

And as many have stated, they would pay more for a stable all in one product.

So whats holding you all back?

Why sit there complaining that Apple hasn’t listened to your wishlist and created iSmoke?…just go buy the competitions offering.

You may love Apple, whereas Apple loves mainly your wallet – its your purchases that help keep them where they are, not your unwavering devotion.

If you are unhappy in your relationship – mend it or move on. Although depending on how you deal with it, a divorce could be cheaper!

another thought – have you checked the output with different speakers (and different cable)? Its possible the fault is not your mac, but the speakers.

Speaking as a jack of all trades, i don’t think a unified solution is going to work.

I like having separate apps for different aspects of my work. I don’t think its reasonable to expect one app to be the master of every discipline. And to think its ever going to be so, its just wishful thinking.

I like to be able to pick the right tool for the job, and if that means i edit my video in fcp, but cut and mix audio in Protools, whilst using After Effects to create motion graphics, and Cinema4d to bring in a 3rd dimension to my ideas, then i’m happy working that way.

The other thing i tend to do, is to have my audio software running on a separate mac from the video software. Protools is notoriously slow at updating, so i avoid any conflicts by keeping everything on different machines. Using a KVM matrix means i can use the same dual-screen monitors and my wacom/keyboard regardless of the mac powering them. It also means i can be rendering on one mac whilst dubbing on another. It also gives me a backup system should one mac develop a fault.

I’d hate to be reliant on one app/one mac for my entire workflow. Thats just silly.

I want the software developers to be refining their own products to be as good as possible, rather than being as all encompassing as possible. Forget one size fits all – i’m a big guy, and one size certainly does not fit all…ever!

my wife had a similar problem on an old G4 Powerbook…we found a cure searching the forums at apple, and if my memory is working, it was simply a case of dragging the file com.apple.soundpref.plist out from the root/library/preferences and dropping in the trash (dont empty until your sure this works)

then restarting the laptop. The file should get rebuilt and if alls well sound might return. It certainly cured all the audio weirdness on our laptop…good luck

update – i found the culprit – OpenGL ! thats seems to be the cause of the problem…switch it off and everything works perfectly.

why do they include it when i have never heard anything but bad news about opengl?
