  • try using the “crop” settings in the motion tab, to trim away the edges that are giving you problems.

  • or simply put the clip at the end of the sequence, do your ripple speed change then move the clip back to where you want it.

Ripple only moves the edits after the point in the timeline where you performed the edit, so if you are on the last shot, then there is nothing afterward to ripple.

The one thing i was going to suggest, you seem to have something against – CatDV.

Whilst I don’t use it myself, as i haven’t the need, i was given an in depth demo by one of the writers of the software at a trade show a couple of years ago , and it would seem to be the ideal solution for your dilemma.

You say you want old school, but then list various options that would not really be easily achieved via old school methods.

July 13, 2011 at 8:54 am in reply to: HD – increasing Scale

If you work in an SD timeline, then to see the entire HD image, you will need to shrink the HD by 54% (at least thats the amount in PAL).

If you want to zoom in then you can zoom all the way to 100% without losing any quality and the image will be twice the size it was! By zooming to 200% in the HD timeline you will see artefacting because you are increasing the pixel size of the material.
These will be less obvious when you compress the file, but you will have already introduced a drop in quality which could even make your Compressor job less efficient, as it will have more noise to contend with.
However, as you are not outputting a HD edit, you would be better off editing in a format closer to the end product, and gaining the scaling flexibility afforded by using that HD material in a less generous frame size.

July 11, 2011 at 9:06 am in reply to: 12 FPS vs. 24 FPS “Shot on Twos”

depends on the playback speed of the finished piece.

24fps on twos will playback at normal speed on a 24 fps sequence, as will 12fps on a 12fps sequence.

Bearing in mind very little plays back at a native 12fps, if you were to add the 12fps material to any other timeline, then you r playback speed will vary depending on the playback speed. So if you put 12fps material in a 24fps sequence, you’ll speed everything up to twice normal speed.

sorry for the delay in responding – only just had a chance to re-look at this.

I think it might have helped, although i have also upgraded to CS5.5 since i asked the question.
    thanks for the suggestion.

I do find the entire application incredibly slow to respond to any mouse click, though! And talk about a slow startup !! sheesh!
