Title Safe for Web?
I’m using CS5.5. My background is in broadcast, where we tried to keep all CG within the title safe lines. My understanding is that the safe zones had something to do with TV tubes not being flat, but curved out. I now create content almost exclusively for the web. Do I need to worry about title safe and action safe zones? If the video is being viewed on flat computer monitors, it seems to me that the safe zones don’t matter. Am I wrong?

Title safe was from days when the tube (CRT) of the television was masked by a bezel that surrounded it. There was a lot of slop in how much was masked, how much the manufacturer overscanned the tube/border combination, etc. No good way to know, so title safe was very conservative. I’d say with LCD monitors, this is much less the case, but not everyone has LCD monitors yet. For the web, you get no border or masking, so you can use the full frame without regard to title/action safe. (i.e., you are right)

True, don’t forget about good design though. I see stuff that has titles from edge to edge, with no negative space border and it just looks bad…

Just be aware that some media players (including YouTube) tend to cut off a little bit of the bottom. I usually keep my text within the action-safe area, and if I don’t know where the final video/animation will end up playing, I always stay in title-safe. Probably habit from years of doing it, but it doesn’t hurt.

Chris makes a good point. Between player chrome and ads in the lower part of an image, web video can have similar issues—so I try to keep important things away from the edges.
