You can’t “redigitize” because you are lacking two things. The first, tape, and the second timecode. In my opinion you have three options. #1, run tape in the camera or dockable vtr. 2# capture to the io, edit down to what you need, dump that edit to tape, and redigitize from the edited tape. #3 invest in cheap ata hard drives and a FW to ata bridge, Record to the io (fast raid) and then move the files to a back up cheap ata.
I have captured some green screen footage directly from a sdi out (avoiding the dvcam tape compression) to the io, but I was not able to get timecode to move along with the sdi stream. I ended up transcoding the green screen to photo-jpeg at 100% for the backup, and burned that to 4 or 5 DVD-r discs. Pjpeg at 100% can be 4:4:4 8bit and run at 720×486 at about 2.7MB/s. I have key’d from it before and it is a good backup format.

I have shake 3.0 and I can NOT get the io to act as a BC monitor. In theory, under globals, under broadcast quality or render quality (can’t remember witch), you will find a slider for broadcast monitor. Move it to #2 if you have one monitor or #3 if you have two computer monitors. Click the TV looking button on the main window. If you get video, your set, if not call aja.

Looks like your fields are backwards. Try changing the sequence settings.

If you have the time and $$$, an audio post house will do a much better job than you will ever accomplish with the tools in FCP 3. Like Thax said, there are too many questions. Tell us your specific problems with audio for a better answer.

Are the Xserves 14 drive models? And are the two 7 drive sides striped together? Are they 512MB cache raid controllers? Are you running two Dual port Fiber Channel cards to connect the two xserves? Are the cards in the correct slot? Do you have at least 2GB of ram in the G5?

You can capture up to 8 channels simultaneously with FCP 5 OS10.4, as long as your hardware supports it. Most vendors (aja, decklink, ect) are rewriting there drivers as we speak to do this.

I have been editing for 18 months, and have completed more than 75 hours of edited programing on the io (full size), most of it hour long documentaries at 20:1+ edit ratios. I also have a cinewave, and kona 2 systems. The io, as its name describes, is perfect for SD editing when multiple different decks are often used. I have never bought a deck, and only rent. I have cut 1″, 2″, 3/4″sp, Beta SP, Dbeta, Pani M2, DVCPRO over sdi, and DVCPROHD down converted out of the deck to SDI. I mostly offline at D50 and on line at UC10bit from the io. I feel that the io has given me grater flexibility than any other SD solution that I have ever used. I started with the io on a G4 dual 800Mhz with Medea RTR 1.2TB SCSI 160 raid, and have added a second io running on a G5 dual 2.5 with Xraid 14 drive 3.8TB raid. On both systems cutting D50 and UC10bit have been a breeze. The G4 will do two streams of UC10bit color corrected in RT, and the G5 will push around 5 streams color corrected. Both are running FCP 4.5 HD. I have never had drop frame issues, and I personally do not notice the 7 frame offset. All of my stability problems have been due to FCP corrupting its own preference files (a one minute fix) and not with the io. AJA’s tech support is the very best in the industry and is only manned by two guys. I had a deck fry my svideo in jack (yes, I know rental decks and all…), and AJA sent me a new io in less than 24 hours. Also I work in after effects and the io provides broadcast out at 10bits from AE. Also the io works with the Black magic 10 bit codec so I can work with PC clients.

Cons: Slow software updates (mainly due to Apple supplying drivers).
Automatic Duck is a must have to work with AVID projects In FCP ($500-$1000).
Optical Audio support is limited to ADAT (an update is coming… sometime).
FCP Cons: Title Tool Sucks (buy boris red or motion or AE), and I can’t mix codecs in the timeline. All my other gripes about FCP are fixed in V5.0.That’s my opinion. You can save $$$ if you work only with one format (say SDI) but I don’t. I need the flexibility that the io offers. Oh, and seeing a client drool over UC10bit playing off a laptop (G$ 1.5ghz FW800 medea G-raid) through the io is worth the price of admission.

I have had this problem across the board with almost every deck that I have used. First off, some decks are better than others but it has been hit and miss. Mostly I find that using either LTC or VLTC (during strip and ETT) but not both works much better. Also digging around in the deck’s menus and turing on Duplicate timecode from LTC/VLTC to VLTC/LTC works better than the mac sending both (got your manuel?). In fact, i have seen beta decks read off one frame on an external reader, but be on frame on FCP and the deck display. Try switching between LTC and VLTC in the deck control menu. Also make sure that you have run your BBG properly (That is: deck ref in —> deck ref out —> IO ref —> 75 Ohm Terminator [all over 75ohm bnc]) , leave deck termination off, and let the monitor free run w/o a bbg feed. If your on house black (multiple BBG outs), run only one ref signal output loop in the order described, and don’t independently feed the deck and io.
