Right, no RT on JPEG, but this is for offline, so we’re basically talking cuts and dissolves. I’m not so busy that I can’t afford to render out dissolves.

    I use Photo-JPEG at full rez and 35% quality. For me this is a great size/quality trade-off (about 20:1 compression from 8-bit uncompressed 422, roughly 1 MB/sec)

    My $0.02:

For DV footage, I use 8-bit, unless I am adding graphics with gradients, transfer-mode compositing or lighting effects. I don’t see a difference in color correction between 8/10 bit when using DV originated footage.

Sunds to me like your monitor has a pass-through and is not terminated

  • Not a matter of possible/impossible, just a matter of simple geometry. Think about it: How can you change the aspect ratio to a wider ratio without cropping or stretching the picture?

  • What you describe is impossible. To get from 4:3 to 16:9 you must lose part of the picture. The Panasonic camera just crops the picture, unlike other anamorphic systems.

Ina any event After Effects will do a better job than FCP, picture-quality-wise

So long as there will be no analog sources, you should get the plain vanilla Decklink card, which should be all you need. UNLESS, you need analog out for monitoring on a non-SDI monitor, then get the DL Pro

Just use the NTSC 23.98 BlackMagic Setup, and have the correct setting in the Decklink System Prefs

Worked on many projects with this camera.

Select the “DV-NTSC 23.98 Advanced Pulldown Removal” Easy Setup

In the AV Settings, change playback (audio and video) to BlackMagic NTSC 23.98 8-bit

Save Easy Setup (I call it “FW Capture/BM playback 23.98 Adv”). I have a similar Easy Setup for 29.97 and normal 3:2

With this Easy Setup you will be ready to capture via FW and playback via DL. I keep the DV deck hooked up to the monitor via SVideo, and the DL via YUV, so I have to switch back and forth when capturing/cutting.

When you’re done, export an “offline” DV movie with window burn

    For online:

    Media Manage the project:

    Recompress
Recompress Media Using BM NTSC 23.98 8-bit (see below)
    Include Master Clips
    Delete unused Media
Use Handles (3 secs, should cover most issues)
    Include Affilliate Clips
Duplicate selected Items and place in new project

Use 10-bit if you have graphics or lighting effects that require it. Otherwise, I find it to be a waste of time/storage

In the new BM sequence, add new layers below V1/A1-A2. Lay in the offline, so it’s TC matches the TC of your new seq. Use this to double check for errors in the Media Management process.

    Color, titles, graphics

Lay back. DL will insert normal 3:2 pulldown to your Beta SP 29.97 tape. I always master to NDF for the master.

    QC

    Have a beer.
